Levein issues rallying cry

11 August 2011-PA Sport

Craig Levein watched his Scotland side beat Denmark for the first time since 1975 in its friendly at Hampden Park and then called for the Tartan Army to make next month's crunch Euro 2012 qualifying clash with Czech Republic one of the great nights at the famous old stadium.

On a sodden night in the south side of Glasgow, 17,582 fans turned up to see Robert Snodgrass' first international goal in his first start give Scotland a narrow 2-1 victory and boost hopes ahead of the upcoming qualifying double-header against the Czechs and Lithuania.

The Scotland boss is looking for a full house at the national stadium to drive his side on in its quest to make Poland and Ukraine next northern summer.

"I think the supporters recognise it is going to be a great occasion and the ticket sales are really good," he said.

"I would encourage anybody who is thinking about coming long to please come along and give us your support.

"I think about the game against Spain last year, the atmosphere within the stadium, and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

"The supporters did brilliantly tonight but multiply that by two and a half or three times and it does make a big difference.

"I think everybody has to see evidence of things getting better and if we can keep improving and the players believe it then we will have a big chance.

"I am confident that we are capable of beating Czech Republic and I know we will play in the same manner and run ourselves in to the ground to win the game, I know that and it is a big thing to have in your armoury."

Charlie Adam's free-kick which deflected off William Kvist Jorgensen gave Levein's side the lead in the 21st minute but on the half-hour mark Christian Eriksen's free-kick from wide on he left flew over Allan McGregor's head for the equaliser.

However, two minutes from the break Snodgrass stooped to head in Kenny Miller's cross for a morale-boosting win.

Levein, who revealed that Scott Brown's ankle injury which forced him off in the first half was a 'one or two out of 10' in terms of severity, was pleased for Snodgrass and young stopper Danny Wilson.

He said: "Him and Danny did very well.

"The purpose of this was to see if they could handle this type of game and they passed with flying colours.

"I'm delighted for Robert to score a goal and for Danny to play in a defence which lost only one goal against a top, top side.

"It shows a sign of progress and that we have a winning mentality.

"A year ago at this time we sat in Sweden talking a defeat which was hefty and sore and it was very difficult for me to take any positives.

"The real pleasing thing was that in the first half we played for long spells the way that I wanted us to do, patient in possession and incisive in attack, which is indicative of the stuff that we have been playing in the last four or five games.

"Overall it is another small step in the right direction."

Levein acknowledged McGregor had made a mistake for Denmark's goal but praised the Rangers keeper for the way he responded.

"He made a mistake but he is the type of guy who doesn't let that faze him," he said.

"He saved us tonight with some brilliant saves.

"He is a strong character, sometimes when a keeper makes those types of mistakes they let it affect them but he puts it to the back of his mind and gets on with it."

Denmark coach Morten Olsen was 'irritated' to have lost the game.

"In the first half we played with five players who do not play much club football," he said.

"It is different if you have to win the game.

"If we had to win that game you would look at it with different eyes.

"Scotland played some good football but it was an own goal and mistake for their goals.

"In the second half we had four or five good opportunities and Scotland had nothing.

"So it was irritating but I can live with that."
