Protests force Brazil to change plans

13 June 2013-AP

Brazil has been forced to change its travel plans for Saturday afternoon's (Sunday morning AEST) FIFA Confederations Cup opener against Japan because of protests against the local government at its training base.

The squad was expected to go from Goiania to the capital of Brasilia by bus on Wednesday, but the Brazilian football federation decided to make the 200-kilometre trip by plane because protests organised by local unions could block the highway.

Dozens of protesters, including professors and students, were in front of the Brazil hotel late on Tuesday, carrying banners and signs demanding better treatment from the Goias state government.

Some of the signs said that too much money was spent to host Brazil's training camp ahead of the FIFA Confederations Cup.
