Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Michael Theo’s new four-year extended contract means he’s built long-term stability around his future on and off the football pitch.
At 31, Theo is one of the veterans of the Roar playing roster, which is reflected in his position in the club’s four-man leadership group and the more than 130 A-League appearances he has to his now-shortened name.
But with the unpredictability that can come with a career in professional sport, Theo knew he had to plan for his future and was eager to stay with the A-League champion.
“I knew my next decision was a big one,” he said.
“In saying that, both my wife and I thoroughly enjoy Brisbane and the lifestyle we have here.
“That was a very important factor for us – being happy on the pitch and off the pitch.
“From day one, I always wanted to stay in Brisbane and luckily for me, the club shared my vision of me being here long-term.
“On a personal note, I thrive on the environment we’ve created here over the past two years and from that perspective, it really was a no-brainer to extend my stay.”
Melbourne born and raised, Theo began his career in the Victorian Premier League before joining Melbourne Victory in the inaugural A-League 2005-2006 season.
He spent four years at the Melbourne club and after a brief stint overseas with Norwich City, the goalkeeper signed for Brisbane Roar in March 2010.
Theo’s football journey has yielded an impressive four A-League championships and three A-League goalkeeper of the year awards and he’s confident his contract extension is the base for more success.
He explained he also wanted to make the right decision for his wife Victoria, whose newly-formed cosmetics business has just been launched.
