The FFA's Zullo mission
By Les Murray | 21 April 2008 | 14:17
Michael Zullo, Queensland Roar’s electrifying teenage winger, is on around $30,000 a year.

Believe it, for it’s true.
This is no way to run a football league is it? Something that has, by the way, already occurred to the FFA.
Zullo was among the A-League’s true entertainers last season and not far behind were his contemporaries, Robbie Kruse and Taj Minniecon, both of whom take home similar amounts – enough to procure a daily loaf of bread but with little left for the butter or jam.
I confess to being a big fan of all three of them, along with a handful of other fresh faced kids some A-League coaches were uncommonly courageous enough to regularly select last campaign.
Slumped on my lounge, watching an A-League game, it is not uncommon for me to leap off my bum, screaming to an innate TV screen: ‘Bring on the kid!’, by way of advice to a coach whose team has fallen behind with 30 minutes to go.
And, sorry to boast, but almost invariably I am right. The kid, whenever the coach obliges, always makes a difference even if he isn’t necessarily able to bring the game out of the fire, at least not on his own.
There is something distinctly thrilling in football about giving a youngster a go.
The game’s history is full of it and one need not cite a better example than the 16-year old Pelé in the 1958 World Cup. Diego Maradona made his professional club debut at 15, Ferenc Puskás at 16, Johan Cruyff at 17, Zinedine Zidane at 17, Ronaldinho at 18, etcetera.
So goodness only knows why it is that some coaches, among them some dreary uncourageous men who steer A-League teams, are so reluctant to put faith in young, ambitious talent.
We know the stock answer, of course. You need experienced players to win things, blah blah blah.
In which case, why don’t we bring Alfredo di Stefano out of retirement and sign him as a marquee, or better still, bring Stanley Matthews back from the dead?
I sense that the coaches with this kind of pathological resistance to youth are about to get their comeuppance. I sense that next season will be a good one for youth promotion so stand by for having your funny bone tickled by the entry of ambitious kids, like Zullo, who want to impress, excite and put on a show.
One reason is the advent of the Youth League, which will compel clubs to contract a host of young players who, in turn, will gain a stage, forcing the senior coaches not to ignore them.
In addition, with imports being a bit on the nose after so many flops among them last season, and with the usual off-season talent drain to foreign destinations, clubs will be forced to replenish their numbers with youth.
Meantime, the FFA has now intervened to protect the league’s youth quota with an additional $150,000 salary allowance, above the salary cap, for players young enough to qualify playing for the Olympic team.
This was a splendid initiative, a compromise move by the FFA which is no doubt concerned by the lowly wages the salary cap imposes on the league, leading to inevitable player emigration to richer pastures.
The salary cap will be increased again next season and, together with this initiative, it is likely that the climate for a braver use of young players will be enhanced.
Meaning that Zullo, and his like, will get a better deal and he will stick around a little longer to entertain us.
Speaking of youth, the Joeys’ path to the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup was revealed recently.
Pitted against Saudi Arabia, China and Turkmenistan, the Australians are in ‘the toughest group’, according to coach Martyn Crook. He warned that the Saudis and the Chinese are teams to be feared, given both have been Asian champions recently at this level.
I say the draw is wonderful. At this age level, the tougher the draw, the better it is for our players.
The reason is that, at 17, the object of participating in tournaments of this kind is not just the natural aim of winning them but as a medium for developing our elite young players.
Personally, I couldn’t give a hoot if Australia doesn’t win the U-17 World Cup, provided they try to play a way that is good for their development and that they emerge from the tournament better players.
Crook can’t be blamed of course for wanting to win and for wishing the draw had been easier. He probably believes he will be judged on his results and, unfortunately, he’s not far wrong.
But with developing quality players for our senior national team being the ultimate aim of fielding a Joeys team at all, there would have been no gain whatsoever in their being drawn against a bunch of easy-beats.

Im sick of seeing all of this slander of the salary cap, it seems noone even knows what good it is actually doing. consider that there was never one at all. sydney would be the australian version of chelsea and perth would be all but completely gone by now. yes introducing this youth cap will help entice youth players to hang around for an extra year or two but then they are just going to leave for the same reason they are today at a younger age, better development coaching.

Continuing on from last post. I think that this needs to be raised to say 5 with a requirement to field 3 in the starting 11. If managers arent going to give enough young players the opportunity then rules like this would have to be bought in to make sure young players are gaining the experience at the right level. This has to be part of an overall plan to make the aleague a develop league for upcoming australian talent. As a victory supporter it was great to watch leijer grow and get his move.

I think this iniative is a good first step by the FFA to get the focus more on youth in the a-league, but more needs to be done I think. There should be a great incentive to actually play young players, rather than just paid them more or retain them on the list, ofcourse the youth league will see that happen at that level this year but it needs to happen more at a-league level. Im not sure what the current rule is, maybe 2 required under 21/23 players in a match day squad (to be continued)

I would prefer to see our young players shipped off to europe to develop against the best. With the A-league still in its infancy we need to develop the talent pool here and market them correctly to maximise their transfer value. Wecould then encourage quality players to join the A-league at a younger age while still in their prime and raise the standard of the league. Our youth coming through the system would learn here aginst quality players inceasing the quality and value of the next gen.

If you let the youth marquee money be split among several players you may as well just increase the cap because that is all you are doing. The youth marquee money allows clubs to hold onto one outstanding youth player rather than loose them overseas eg Leijer or Zadkovich may have stayed here another season or Djite, Burns etc may be able to be held here a little longer. And their salary, now out of the cap level, is then freed up for other players so it does spread the funds in its own way.

I watch in agony and frustration at the salary cap of the A-League. Seeing your report just shatters me more. As much as I want for our home grown league to succeed, all I am seeing is the failure to establish even simple things such as a salary cap. But hey, maybe that's too much to ask from the former AFL man.

I can't tolerate all the people who say Ernie Merrick doesn't play youth, in the current starting line up 3 players are under 23, Broxham, Ryall and Ward. What he doesn't like is creative players, That is why Melbourne played some of the worst football this year. Kaz has not had a fair run this year (not to mention Caceres) and I would be surprised to see him around next year.

To follow on from this, the A-League will need to: a) continue to increase the $150,000 as the rest of the salary cap goes up; b) make sure middle-aged players of relative 'quality' are getting paid $100,000 as well; and c) that after the best youngsters have shone bright on the Asian stage Australian clubs are getting the windfall from the transfers overseas. If our very best are staying until 24 then we'll have a damn good competition.

The A-League must come to be seen as a competition comprising of the best young talent Australia has to offer, combined with vintage players returning home and middle age players who are better off here than in secondary leagues overseas. To keep the best until their 24 (which will significantly raise the standard of the league) will require a lot of money. This move is a step in the right direction. It should allow about three players (not 1 btw) to be on $100,000.

Maradona overshadowed by brilliant Brazil
So Diego Maradona now has the first game under his belt as coach of Argentina, with his first win, but it was Brazil that was most impressive as they thumped a dismal Portugal.
Let's be fair dinkum about Asia
It's nice to be loved, but sometimes it's even nicer to be governed. That is what Australian football, so far as its international station is concerned, must be feeling since joining the AFC.
Batten down the hatches, Mohamed, you're in for a fight
For AFC boss Mohamed Bin Hammam to say that Wellington Phoenix should be booted out of the A-League after 2011 is in my opinion wrong and unfair.

"As for Kosmina, he gave Djite, Cornthwaite and Nathan Burns their start in the A-League - all are now regular Olyroos." True but guess what? How long did it take Burns to get a start? Lemme ask you something else, how much game-time did Djite get under Kosmina? 20 minutes tops altogether. Vidmar is much better in this regard.
