Fierce fight... Canberra and Brisbane couldn't be split after 90 minutes (Getty)
Canberra United and Brisbane Roar battled to a scoreless stalemate in a low key opening to the W-League season between last season's grand final combatants.
Both teams battled hard in warm conditions in the nation's capital, chances on goal rare with reigning champions Canberra - who went through the season last year undefeated - failing to take advantage of an injury-hit Brisbane outfit.
United's Caitlin Munoz came close to breaking the deadlock late, with her fierce free-kick tipped onto the crossbar by Roar goalkeeper Hoshimi Kishi.
Earlier Michelle Heyman had a header cleared off the line while Emily Gielnik was also unable to convert for the Roar when presented with a sight of goal.
Brisbane came to Canberra looking to avenge a 3-2 loss in last season's finale.
Roar went into the match without 2011 Australian player of the year Elise Kellond-Knight, Kim Carroll and Casey Dumont, with the latter pair out for the season, while fellow Matildas ace Tameka Butt came on as a second-half substitute after her return from injury.
"Our performance wasn't the best," said Canberra United coach Jitka Klimkova.
"We made a few mistakes, and I think some of the players showed a little bit of nerves.
"To be honest I didn't think we would have a super performance, but it was a bit disappointing to make so many mistakes.
"I am still optimistic, I believe in this team and I know we can play better."
