Australia's Futsalroos coach Steven Knight has named a 16-player squad for the ASB Trans Tasman Cup against New Zealand's “Futsal Whites” at ASB Stadium in Kohimarama.
Knight will be use the three-match series from 21-23 September to prepare his team for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Championships in Thailand.
“Since qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup, the players have personally taken their preparation to another level with extra fitness training and court sessions which is fantastic considering their amateur status and balancing work & family commitments,” Knight said.
“The upcoming series against New Zealand will be our first hit-out against international opposition since qualification and every minute on the court from here to Thailand is extremely important.
"We have been training hard, but you can only do so much in training compared to a match.
“I’ll also be using the series to test a number of younger players to see if they are up to international level.
“These matches signal the start of the final selection process and it is now up to the players to prove that they deserve to be in the final squad for the FIFA Futsal World Cup."
The Qantas Futsalroos have been drawn in Group D of the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2012 along with Argentina, Mexico and Italy.
