NYL: Gold Coast climbs, Mariners stay top

4 February 2012-SBS

Goals from Mitch Cooper, Sami Tesfagabr and Bobby Russell secured a 3-1 win for Gold Coast United over Perth Glory in an entertaining National Youth League encounter on Saturday.

Perth's goal from Harry O’Brien came when his side was 2-0 down and proved to be only a consolation once Russel ensured the three points for the home team in time-added-on.

Despite the loss Perth holds on to second place on the ladder, but Gold Coast has now moved within three points of its opponent after registering its third win in four games.

Elsewhere in the NYL on Saturday, Adelaide United handed Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) a 5-1 thrashing.

Two early goals in each half, including a double from Evan Kostopoulos and one each to Ricardo Da Silva and Awer Mabil saw the home team reach an insurmountable 4-0 lead by the 58th minute.

Stefan Mauk did pull one back for AIS but Nicholas Mavromatis restored the four-goal advantage in the 83rd minute.

On Friday night, Central Coast Mariners stayed top of the NYL ladder with a 2-0 win over Brisbane Roar.

Mitchell Duke scored both goals to help hand his side to its sixth win in a row.
