Australia has been drawn alongside Korea Republic, India and Bahrain in Group C for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup to be held in Qatar.
The Socceroos are Asia's highest ranking side in 19th, well ahead of Japan (45) and group rival Korea Republic (49).
They will also be up against Bahrain - whom they beat twice on the way to qualifying for the World Cup.
Holder Iraq has been handed a tough start to the defence of its crown after being drawn against Iran, North Korea and UAE in Group D
North Korea has qualified for the 2010 World Cup and UAE made it through to the final stage of Asian qualifying for South Africa.
Host Qatar will be much happier with its lot having been drawn alongside Uzbekistan, China and Kuwait in Group A, while Group B features Saudi Arabia, Japan, Jordan and Syria.
Both India and North Korea qualified for the continental showpiece by winning the AFC Challenge Cup. The Asian Cup takes place in Qatar from January 7 to 29.
