Melbourne Victory suffered their first AFCChampions League defeat after a late brace by substitute Jules Boga gave Thai champions Chonburi FC an upset 3-1 win at the Supachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok.

The A-League side looked set to secure at least a point in hot, humid conditions after Victory striker Danny Allsopp's 57th minute equaliser had cancelled out Brazilian striker Ney Fabiano's opener for the home side.

But Cameroonian Boga scored twice in the last ten minutes - his first a spectacular 35-metre thunderbolt - to secure all three points and knock the Victory off the top of the group.

"We're gutted, the second goal really killed us," Victory coach Ernie Merrick told AAP after the match.

"We scored one goal and as we started to get more and more possession that goal came out of the blue."

"Against the run of play and that really killed us."

The win moved the Thai side into the lead alongside Japan's Gamba Osaka, who earlier scored a 4-3 win at Korea's Chunnam Dragons, after coming back from a two-goal deficit.

The Victory dropped to third but still sit only one point behind the joint leaders, with their April 9 clash with Osaka likely to prove crucial to their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.

"All teams have lost points, so we're all very close so and we're certainly not out of it," said Merrick.

"There's still everything to play for."

Merrick's side withstood some early attacking pressure from the Thai side to create plenty of opportunities of their own.

But they often lacked the last pass, with Socceroos striker Archie Thompson kept relatively quiet by the Chonburi defence.

The home side broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when winger Arthit Soontornpit broke free on the left and floated in cross to allow unmarked Ney Fabiano to power a header past Victory goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos.

The Australians returned from the break with renewed intent and levelled the scores in the 57th minute.

A Matthew Kemp cross fell to Allsopp, who smashed home his volley into the top of the Chonburi net.

Tensions rose in the ensuing minutes as both sides went in search of a winner and the Victory looked to be building pressure.

But with ten minutes on the clock, Boga unleashed an unstoppable 35m drive that will take some beating for goal of the tournament.

Chonburi went a man down in the 85rd minute when Soontornpit was shown his second yellow card.

Allsopp missed a chance to equalise in the dying minutes when he flashed a header wide before Boga slotted home his second deep into injury time to seal the result.
