Futsalroos storm past hapless Korea

27 May 2012-SBS

Australia is through to the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Championship 2012 after a crushing 6-0 victory over Korea Republic at the Al Shabab Club Stadium in Dubai.

Fernando De Moraes scored twice on 15 and 19 minutes for the Futsalroos while Tobais Seeto (22nd), Daniel Fogarty (25th), Gregory Giovenali and goalkeeper Peter Spathis added singles in the Group C encounter.

"At this amateur level, players sometime fall under pressures so we had to be very cautious in the beginning but with the progression of the match we got it right," Australia coach Steven Knight told afc.com.

"Even we knew that they will rely on power-play later so we also had sessions on that and successfully dealt with that."

Knight was referring to the goals scored from Australia's own half into an empty net from Giovenali in the 33rd minute and keeper Spathis on 40 minutes.

Australia is second in the group standings after two wins from as many attempts, trailing Iran on goal difference after it demolished Qatar 8-0.

"We will face Iran next and you have to respect the world's elite so we will go into the match with our conservative mindset but our eyes are in the quarter-finals, which would be a really big match for the whole of Australia," Knight said.

The top four finishers of the AFC Futsal Championship directly qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2012 to be held in Thailand later this year.
