SBS The World Game understands Jamshedpur want to bring Fitzgerald to India for the 2020-2021 Indian Super League season.

Jamshedpur, which were founded only three years ago and are owned by Tata Steel, are coached by former Burnley and Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle. The Red Miners previously had Tim Cahill on their books.

Fitzgerald joined the Jets from Western Sydney Wanderers in 2019 on a two-year deal. The forward scored three goals in 20 appearances for Newcastle last season.

The 28-year-old debuted in the A-League in 2010 with Central Coast Mariners. He won a championship with the Roar in 2012 before rejoining the Mariners and helping them claim a championship in 2013.

Fitzgerald left Central Coast three years later to sign for Melbourne City and was part of the team that won the FFA Cup in 2016.

The former Young Socceroo and Olyroo then spent a season with the Wanderers, before his move to the Hunter.

A large number of A-League players have flocked to the cashed-up Indian competition in recent weeks, including Jets defender James Donachie. The season there begins in November and finishes in March, and will be played behind closed doors in stadiums in Goa.

Indian clubs are now allowed to sign a maximum of seven foreign players, but at least one has to be from a country in the Asian Football Confederation.

Seven of the 11 clubs will field Australians in the new season, as well as ex-A-League players such as Steven Taylor, Ro Krishna, Gary Hooper and Adam Le Fondre.

Financially struggling Newcastle have been gutted in recent weeks with the departures of coach Carl Robinson and players Dimi Petratos, Matt Millar, Abdiel Arroyo and Donachie.

Both Jamshedpur and the Jets had not responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.
