Popovic, a former Olyroo, is off-contract after leaving Austrian second division side SV Lafnitz.
The World Game understands the 23-year-old is currently in Australia finalising a deal with Macarthur.
Popovic grew up in Liverpool, in Sydney’s south-west, and played for Marconi and Blacktown City as a youngster.
The 1.9 metre-tall forward moved overseas at the age of 16 and signed with Italian giants Lazio.
Popovic spent two years with I Biancocelesti before moving to German club Havelse in 2015.
He also made four appearances for Australia’s Under-23s between 2017 and 2018, when the Olyroos were coached by Bulls boss Ante Milicic.
Popovic tore his ACL early last year after joining SV Lafnitz from Eintracht Braunschweig.
He made his return to the field in November in a 2-0 loss to SC Austria Lustenau.
Macarthur have been busy in the transfer market, signing former Socceroos Mark Milligan, Adam Federici and Tommy Oar, as well as Olyroos winger Denis Genreau.
The new A-League outfit have also been linked with a move for English striker Matt Derbyshire, according to reports in the UK.
Macarthur have been approached for comment at the time of writing.
