'Weird scenario' won't stop Taggart flying for Bluewings again

Adam Taggart admits getting his head around football’s new normal is befuddling.

After last week playing in front of an empty stadium, but a worldwide audience of millions as the K League resurfaced, the Socceroos striker will do it all again on Sunday when his Suwon Bluewings take on Jason Davidson's Ulsan Hyundai.

Piped in crowd noise, no handshakes, no team huddles and restrictions on spitting and verbal interaction with teammates are the protocols Taggart and his teammates must now embrace.

And last season’s K League Golden Boot concedes playing to an audience of mask-wearing coaches and ground staff is not the ideal way to get the adrenaline flowing as the K League 1 leads the world in returning to action from the COVID-19 hiatus.

After the 1-0 opening round loss to Jeonbuk - with Taggart picking up a yellow card and his Aussie teammate Terry Antonis a red - he is looking to quickly pick up where he left off in his 20-goal debut season.

“The whole scenario of that first game was weird,” Taggart said. “There were no fans there but chanting coming in through loudspeakers.

“We were aware that millions were watching around the world (on social media platforms) because there was no other football on.

“It was odd not being able to shake hands, or talk. I personally thrive playing in front of people and there being a bit of atmosphere.

“It was a strange one not having that. It was like playing a friendly but these games actually mean something.

“There didn’t seem like there was much passion going on but you can’t do anything about that at the moment.

“I’m just glad I got that first game out of the way because now I know what to expect.”

Taggart - who didn’t feel he got involved enough against Jeonbuk - is looking for more urgency all round for the visit of Ulsan.

“It was really disappointing against Jeonbuk. First half we were okay but in the second we crumbled a bit,” added Taggart, who was withdrawn with 13 minutes left.

“I don’t think their goal was down to Terry being sent off (three minutes earlier) it was just down to poor marking at a set-piece.

“In general we weren’t too good - I can’t remember us having a shot on goal the whole game.

“We’ve got another opportunity now against Jason’s team - who by the looks of it are going to be the team to beat this year.”

Davidson flew up and down the left flank, delivering a number of telling crosses as Ulsan crushed Sangju Sangmu 4-0 to begin the season with a flourish.

“They were top of the league most of last year and just needed a draw for the title on the final day, but ended up losing,” Taggart added.

“I know they want to make up for missing out last year and they were really impressive in that first game.

“It’s nice to see an Aussie doing well there. It was difficult for Davo last year but he’s had a big pre-season and looked really good.

“He was giving the strikers plenty to feed off.”
