‘Magnificent’ Mooy in demand as Brighton ponder permanent deal

In-form Australia midfielder Aaron Mooy “won’t be short of suitors” if he continues to excel for Brighton & Hove Albion in collaboration with his fellow Socceroo Mat Ryan.

That’s the verdict of Mooy’s UK-based agent Josh Barnett after what he describes as a “magnificent run” of recent performances from the 29-year-old.

Having worked his way into the Seagulls line-up after arriving on a season-long loan from relegated Huddersfield Town, Mooy, with 11 appearances to date, has played the entire 90 minutes of the last four games, conjuring a masterclass in the 2-1 win over Arsenal.

With his displays for Australia mirroring his club form, it’s safe to assume that Mooy - who is contracted at Huddersfield until 2022 - is unlikely to be sighted back at the John Smith’s Stadium anytime soon.

The most likely post-season scenario would see him join Brighton on a permanent basis, assuming the clubs can agree a fee for a player likely to be valued by the Terriers at around $28 million.

Brighton’s record signing is $32 million man Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who arrived from AZ Alkmaar in mid-2018.

They would be reluctant to pay much more than $19 million for Mooy - the same sum the Terriers handed Manchester City for him in 2017 after he’d spearheaded their promotion to the Premier League.

“Brighton have an option to buy him and sure they’ll (be keen) to take it up,” said Barnett, whose Stellar Group agency counts Gareth Bale among its clients.

“The ball is pretty much in Brighton’s court. Nothing has been discussed as yet, and who knows what will happen.

“He’s playing magnificently at the moment - he’s showing consistency and he’s not going to be short of suitors, put it that way.”

Huddersfield’s new owner Phil Hodgkinson signed Mooy to a new three year contract last August with the expectation of selling him on this northern summer at what he considers a decent sum.

With Mooy turning 30 in September, Hodgkinson will be looking to make a sale while the playmaker is still around his prime in order to maximise the club’s return on what has proved a wise investment.

There is also the consideration of Mooy’s wages, which are believed to be beyond the reach of Huddersfield as they languish in the lower reaches of the Championship.
