Bayern Munich reaping the rewards of Kovac revolution

Niko Kovac has a golden opportunity to achieve what master coaches Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti failed to do at Bayern Munich - land the Bavarian giants the coveted UEFA Champions League crown.

Bayern's extraordinary 7-2 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in London on match day two of Europe's most important club competition would suggest that Kovac's side are ready to go all the way after a dramatic overhaul in personnel.

The exhilarating performance and staggering result sent reverberations around the football world and served notice that the 'new' Bayern under the leadership of the Berlin-born Croat are nicely poised to give the season's tournament a massive shake.

It was the most significant outcome of yet another enthralling Champions League round that saw holders Liverpool survive a massive fright from unfancied Salzburg before winning 4-3 at Anfield, Barcelona overcome a poor first half to beat a very strong Inter side 2-1 with two worldies from Luis Suarez and Real Madrid dig deep to force a home 2-2 draw with Club Brugge.

Bayern last won the trophy in 2013 when they overcame Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in an all-action, all-German final to snare a memorable treble.

That Wembley triumph was the last hurrah for coach Jupp Heynckes but the subsequent appointments of Guardiola and Ancelotti failed to replicate that triumph.
The nearest Bayern came to rule Europe once again was when they lost to Atletico Madrid on away goals in the 2015-16 semi-finals.

And it would have come as little consolation to Germany's best known club that on the other five occasions since 2013 they fell to the eventual winners, four times in the semi-finals.

The side was seen as stale and rather old and an injection of new blood was urgently needed.

Which is where the Kovac revolution started to take shape.

Since he took over in June 2018 Kovac has overseen the departure of Douglas Costa, Arturo Vidal, Juan Bernat, Franck Ribery, James Rodriguez, Rafinha, Mats Hummels and Renato Sanches while Arjen Robben retired.

In came Benjamin Pavard, Ivan Perisic, Philippe Coutinho and Tottenham's tormentor Serge Gnabry.
Bayern's romp in north London, that came after a 3-0 thrashing of Red Star Belgrade on match day one, has put them in a strong position to win the group and create a solid platform from which to launch their assault on Liverpool's title.
Spurs might be in disarray and struggling for confidence with serious doubts surrounding the future of manager Mauricio Pochettino and some players among them star midfielder Christian Eriksen.

But the enormity of Bayern's performance should not be underestimated. Make no mistake, scoring seven goals against a top English side away from home is a hell of an achievement.

Bayern went about their business with ruthless efficiency and their positive attitude was evident when it took them only three minutes to respond to Son Heung-min's opening goal with a ferocious drive from Joshua Kimmich before Robert Lewandowski and Gnabry stole the show with six goals between them.

Klopp, who lost several battles with Bayern when he was in charge of Dortmund, would have been deeply impressed with Bayern's ability to churn out so many attacking attacking manoeuvres away from home.

He knows that Bayern are a club with a winning mentality and he realises that they pose the most serious threat to Liverpool's continental aspirations.

The European champions have every reason to feel that they may have seen the best of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona who are struggling in La Liga although they should be strong enough to reach the last16 in Europe.

But life was not meant to be easy, they say, and Liverpool now might have to contend with the considerable challenge of a new-look Bayern that are looking as menacing as ever.
