Aussies Abroad: Mabil scores for Midtjylland as Socceroos star in Denmark

Awer Mabil has opened his account for the season with a brilliant finish in Midtjylland's 2-0 win against Danish Superliga rivals Sonderjyske.

The Socceroos winger slotted past the keeper in the 24th minute from the tightest of angles after receiving the ball at the back post from a cross.

Brazilian import Evander wrapped up the win with a booming strike from distance to maintain Midtjylland's unbeaten start to the campaign.

The 23-year-old was given a start on the right wing by Midtjylland's interim coach Brian Priske who took over last week after Kenneth Andersen quit following the side's elimination from the UEFA Europa League.
Mabil was substituted in the 78th minute.

The result means Midtjylland finish the round in second spot behind Copenhagen with six wins and a draw from their first seven games.

Elsewhere in Denmark, the Aussie trio of Mustafa Amini, Zac Duncan and Alex Gersbach tasted victory with their AGF Aarhus side defeating Brondby 3-0.

Amini and Duncan started the match in midfield playing the entire match as AGF eased to victory at home.

Gersbach was named on the bench but failed to see any action.

It was a battle of the Matildas stars in the NWSL on Monday morning as Sam Kerr's Chicago Red Stars travelled to Portland to take on a Thorns side featuring Hayley Raso, Ellie Carpenter and Caitlin Foord.

And it was Raso who stole the limelight from Kerr with the 24-year-old winger playing a major role in Portland's huge 3-0 win.

Raso was involved in setting up the Thorns' second and third goals as they cruised to a big win.

The former Brisbane Roar flyer was given a standing ovation when she was substituted in the 85th minute. Carpenter also played a big role in the match keeping Kerr scoreless before being substituted in the 73rd minute.
Caitlin Foord was forced to watch from the bench and didn't get any time on the field.

Australian fans will need to wait until later in the season to see an all Aussie face off in Scotland as Tom Rogic, Daniel Arzani, Ben Garuccio and Oliver Bozanic didn't feature when Celtic defeated Hearts 3-1 at Celtic Park.

Celtic's Rogic and Arzani are both on the comeback from injury and weren't included in Celtic's matchday squad and neither was Hearts' Australian defender Garuccio who is fighting back from a knee injury.

Bozanic was named on the bench for Hearts but did not play.

Socceroos winger Mathew Leckie suffered a reality check this week with his Hertha Berlin side suffering a 3-0 defeat to Wolfsburg only seven days after their 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich.

Leckie was an unused substitute for Hertha in the defeat.

Wolfsburg scored early before outlasting a Hertha onslaught and nabbing another two goals late in the win.
