Aussies Abroad: Irvine nets for Hull as Ryan makes flawless start to Premier League season

It was a big night of action for Aussies plying their trade abroad headlined by a goal scoring performance from Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine and a brilliant display from Mat Ryan in the Premier League.

Irvine hammered home a thunderous header to open his account for the season in Hull City's 2-1 win against Reading at the KCOM Stadium.

It was an impressive overall performance from the 26-year-old who had a fast start to the match with his goal in the 16th minute before playing an important defensive role in the final minutes to help the Tigers secure all three points.

Hull have moved up to 13th on the ladder with one win and a loss from their first two Championship matches.

It was all smiles as well for Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan who kept a clean sheet in Brighton's dominant 3-0 win at Watford.

While Aussie teammate and new Seagulls' signing Aaron Mooy was left on the bench for the match, Ryan played the full 90 minutes to keep out a dangerous Hornets attack.

It was Ryan's first clean sheet for the season and will be a huge confidence booster for the former Mariners custodian.

Mooy will be hoping to make his debut for Brighton next week when they take on West Ham at the Amex Stadium.

Back in the Championship it was a winning debut for Massimo Luongo who made a 10 minute cameo in new club Sheffield Wednesday's 2-0 win against Barnsley.

After joining the Owls at the transfer deadline from QPR, Luongo was given his debut at Hillsborough coming off the bench 80 minutes into the match.

The midfielder had an instant impact forcing a diving save with a blistering shot from range before helping his new side hang on for the win.

Fringe-Socceroos defender Bailey Wright helped his Bristol City side snatch a point as a late Tommy Rowe equaliser gave them a 1-1 draw against Birmingham City.

Wright played 72 minutes in his first Championship match of the campaign for Bristol City before being substituted.

Unfortunately for the Socceroos Asian Cup captain Mark Milligan, his League One side Southend United slumped to a 3-1 defeat against a ten-man Blackpool.

Milligan once again wore the captains armband for the Shrimpers but he couldn't inspire them to a win as Blackpool cruised to victory.

Scottish born Socceroos defender Harry Soutar was unable to repeat his scoring heroics from last week for his League One side Fleetwood Town as they defeated AFC Wimbledon 2-1.

Soutar played the full 90 minutes as Fleetwood made it two wins in as many games.

Burton Albion tasted winning ways in League One thanks to Aussie Ryan Edwards who provided an assist in their 2-1 win against Gillingham.

Brandan Borrello's return from injury made another big step forward with the former Brisbane Roar rising star setting up a dramatic injury time winner for SC Freidburg in their 1-0 DFB Cup win against FC Magdeburg.

Borrello suffered an ACL injury just under two years ago and is only now starting to find the brilliant form which caught the eye of Bundesliga scouts.

Elsewhere in Europe, Milos Degenek was a half-time substitute for FK Crvena Zvezda in their 2-0 win against Mladost Lucani.

The result made it three wins from three in the Serbian Super Liga for Crvena Zvezda.

In Asian football it was a rare scoreless performance from Suwon Bluewings Aussie marksman Adam Taggart as they suffered a 1-0 loss to Incheon United.

Mitch Langerak had better fortunes for J.League outfit Nagoya Grampus as he kept a clean sheet in their 3-0 win against Kawasaki Frontale.

Finally, former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou was on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline as his Yokohama F Marinos team went down to second placed Kashima Antlers.
