It’s understood the 22-year-old left-back has negotiated a release from the remaining two years of his contract with relegated Dutch side NAC Breda, and will join fellow Socceroo Mustafa Amini and rookie midfielder Zach Duncan in Denmark’s top flight.

Gersbach opted to spurn the advances of Perth Glory and Newcastle Jets to remain in Europe where he has had spells with Norwegian powerhouse Rosenborg, on loan in France with Lens and then NAC.

It’s believed the one-time Sydney FC starlet has agreed terms on a four-year deal with AGF, just in time for Tuesday week’s season-opener against Hobro.

Whilst a regular with the Olyroos, Gersbach last appeared on the senior national stage in January, coming off the bench in a pre-Asian Cup clash against Oman.

He will be looking to use this latest move to galvanize his Socceroos chances ahead of the looming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, with Aziz Behich and Brad Smith currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

Speaking to The World Game last month, Gersbach said: “Things didn’t work out and we got relegated ... we’ll see what happens in the coming weeks.

"Things can change quickly in football and you never know.

“I’m not worried too much. Things will take care of themselves.”

Addressing his Socceroos prospects, Gersbach added: “I want to play, be in squads and be involved on the pitch and contribute for my country.

“Right now, the main thing for me is focusing on getting things right at club level.

“Next season is an important one for me.”

AGF’s director of football Peter Christiansen wouldn’t be drawn when contacted by The World Game, saying only: “I never comment on rumours with regards to players going or coming.”

Gersbach’s agent, former Socceroos great Vince Grella, also declined to comment.
