The gifted left-back last appeared on the national stage in January, coming off the bench in a pre-Asian Cup clash against Oman, and hasn’t played a minute since.
And with his club career now potentially up in the air after the relegation of NAC Breda to the Netherlands’ second tier, Gersbach, 22, is unsure where his immediate future might lie.
Back in his hometown of Sydney for a post-season break, Gersbach - who joined NAC on a two-and-half year deal in January, told The World Game: “Things didn’t work out and we got relegated but I still have two years left on my contract.
“We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks but at the moment I am a NAC player. Of course football can change quickly and you never know.
“I’m not worried too much. Things will take care of themselves.
“I would rather be playing in the Eredivisie but we weren’t good enough to stay up.
“When I joined the situation was bad but still fixable but we went on a bad 10-game run and just couldn’t get ourselves out it.
“It's the first time I’ve been involved in something like that (going down). A year earlier at Lens (on loan from Rosenborg) was a similar situation but not quite as bad.”
Gersbach wasn’t considered for this month’s 1-0 friendly loss to Korea Republic as he recovers from a niggling groin problem which he picked up in the latter stages of the season.
He needed pain killers to get out on the pitch for his club and continues to receive treatment after the problem first flared while on Olyroos duty in Cambodia in March.
Now at a potential career crossroads, Gersbach doesn’t want to drop off the national team radar, with Aziz Behich currently the undisputed first choice left-back and Brad Smith breathing down his neck.
“It would have been nice to be involved in the Korea game because I’ve sat on the bench for the Socceroos for the last three years and don’t want to keep doing that,” said the former Sydney FC prodigy, whose European adventure began with Norwegian powerhouse Rosenberg in 2016.
“I want to play, be in squads and be involved on the pitch and contribute for my country.
“Right now, the main thing for me is focusing on getting things right at club level.
“Obviously the relegation hasn’t helped that but next season - whether I’m with NAC or somewhere else - I just want to focus on that side of things and the rest will take care of itself.
“Next season is an important one for me.”
