South Africa 1 Portugal 1

A 1-1 draw for Portugal was not enough as they were eliminated via goals scored after finishing third in Group F.

Rafael Leao scored early for the Portuguese, but a penalty converted in the second half by South Africa's James Monyane meant the Europeans were on course for an early flight home.

Portugal themselves had a penalty five minutes after Monyane's goal, but Khulekani Kubheka saved Jota's penalty.

Four out of the six third-placed teams would qualify for the next round, but Panama managed to score three goals in their three matches to Portugal's two, meaning the 1989 and 1991 champions were heading home.

Mali 2 France 3

France were too strong for Mali, and the win saw them top Group E with a perfect record from the first three matches.

Only Uruguay has also won all three matches so far.

Mickael Cuisance opened the scoring for France in the 12th minute. The Borussia Monchengladbach product fired a long, left-footed effort past a diving Youssouf Koita.

Two minutes later, however, Mali's Sekou Koita responded with a left-footed strike of his own to equalise.

The second half was evenly balanced until a handball by Abdoulaye Diaby earned France a penalty. Moussa Diaby approached the spot with confidence and converted his attempt to regain the lead.

Amine Gouiri made it 3-1 with a finessed shot into the near-side netting in the 87th minute, before fellow substitute Ousmane Diakite got Mali's second with virtually the last kick of the game.

France will face the USA in Bydgoszcz in the Round of 16.

Korea Republic 2 Argentina 1

Korea produced an impressive performance against Argentina as both sides progressed to the next round.

La Albiceleste advance as group winners all the same due to a superior goal difference but, after having it all their own way in their opening two matches, found themselves outplayed and outgunned.

The Asian champions created the better chances in a physical, fast-paced game, and only a desperate goal-line clearance from Maximiliano Centurion prevented Cho Youngwook firing them into a 25th-minute lead.

The breakthrough came three minutes before half-time, though, when Oh Sehun crashed home an unstoppable header from Lee Kangin’s tantalising left-footed cross.

Argentina pushed for an equaliser but made little headway and the outcome never looked in doubt after Cho swept Korea Republic’s second into the roof of the net following a fine run on the left by the lively Jeong Hojin.

Cristian Ferrera did pull a goal back two minutes from time with a speculative long-range shot that deceived keeper Lee Gwangyeon, but it was to prove too little, too late for the South American hopefuls.

Korea Republic now go on to face continental rivals Japan in the Round of 16, while Argentina till take on Mali.

Saudi Arabia 1 Panama 2

Panama defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 to secure the first FIFA U-20 World Cup finals victory in the country's history and to seal their place in the Round of 16 for the first time.

Los Canaleros opened the scoring with a well-worked goal down the left flank. Jorge Mendez played in Ernesto Walker, who found Axel McKenzie with a short cut-back pass, and the Tauro forward finished from close range with his first touch.

Nawaf Alghamdi came up with a couple of saves to keep Saudi Arabia within touching distance, and those stops proved to be even more crucial as the game unfolded.

After the break, Green Falcons forward Feras Albrikan scored a superb equaliser for Saudi Arabia, bringing down right-back Saud Abdulhamid's pinpoint long-range cross with his right foot before turning and hitting a left-foot volley past Panama goalkeeper Marcos Allen.

Panama threatened Alghamdi's goal several times in the second half, with Tomas Rodriguez striking the post before they were finally able to restore their lead.

Angel Orelien's powerful shot stung the palms of Alghamdi and substitute Diego Valanta was in the right place at the right time to tap into the open goal.

The result means that Panama advance to the Poland 2019 Round of 16, while Saudi Arabia will be heading home after three consecutive losses.
