First Indigenous national football teams launched

Australia’s first national Indigenous football teams - the Australian Indigenous Koalas and the Australian Indigenousroos - have been launched to participate in the upcoming 2019 Arafura Games in Darwin.

It will mark the first time the teams will participate in an official tournament.

The national Indigenous men's team, the Australian Indigenousroos, and the national Indigenous women's team, the Australian Indigenous Koalas, were officially selected after the Australian Indigenous Football Championships in Queensland.

Former Socceroo and leading voice for Indigenous football, Craig Foster said football’s participation at the Arafura Games is an historic moment for the game.

“Our game has long dreamt about our First Nations taking on the world in the common international language of football, and of vastly increasing the opportunities for Indigenous players to participate in both our professional game and in representing the country at FIFA World Cups," Foster said.

"This is another critical step in ensuring equality of opportunity for our first peoples and we believe that the beautiful game can play a decisive role in bringing all of our communities in Australia together.

"Then game itself has to do more and, in its absence, the First Nations peoples demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to bringing their own game to life which has been incredible to see.”

Former Futsalroo and Tournament Director of the Australian Indigenous Football Championships, Lawrence Gilbert was a driving force behind the creation of Australia’s first national Indigenous teams, alongside Bruce Stalder, CEO Football NT, Foster, Jamie Warren and Ramone Close.

“Our strategy is to work side-by-side with the Indigenous communities to nurture, support and create a real pathway for Indigenous football talent," Stalder said.

“To have the Australian Indigenous Teams playing their first sanctioned internationals in Darwin, is such a buzz for all Territorians."
