The fans had documented their 16-hour drive from Portugal's Amadora to Germany on Instagram and were delighted to post “we have arrived in Frankfurt”.
However, the group soon discovered they were at the wrong Frankfurt.
Alvaro Oliveira posted a photo of himself on Instagram in front of a signpost for Frankfurt (O) - which is Frankfurt on the Oder - near the Germany border with Poland.
Social media users quickly alerted the Portuguese group that they were 610 kilometres - approximately a six-hour drive - away from Frankfurt, Main, where the match was taking place.
"We are fu***ed," Olivera wrote on Instagram, after realising his embarrassing error.
“Now we have a further six-hour drive.”
According to further posts by Oliveira, the group were unable to make it to the correct Frankfurt in time and were forced to watch the match on TV.
The fans’ blunder quickly went viral as their sorry tale was lapped up as Benfica were defeated and eliminated from the Europa League to only add insult to injury.
