Resilient Simon set for bounce-back season with City

Plagued with a horrific run of injuries during the past five years, Melbourne City striker Kyah Simon is fighting her way back to the top and is driven to make the 2018/19 W-League season her own.

It has been nearly 18 months since Simon went under the knife to have dual shoulder reconstructions and the talented attacker is confident she is finally on the path to playing her best football once again.

A member of Melbourne City's W-League championship winning team last season and fresh off a stint with Houston Dash in America's NWSL, Simon has come into this year's campaign with consistent football under her belt for the first time in quite a while.

Although unavailable for City's opening match of the season last week, the Matildas forward said her determination to perform on the pitch has not waned despite her injury struggles.

"This season my main priority is to get my body right and get back to playing my best football," she said.

"If I've learnt anything from my time off the pitch it is that my time away from the game only makes me stronger.

"I’m really hoping I can go into this season and just be injury free and obviously going into an important year next year with the World Cup as well."

While the World Cup is one major motivation for Simon, leading Melbourne City to an incredible fourth straight W-League title is her immediate focus.

Despite a shock 2-0 loss to Canberra in round one, the 27-year-old is still confident City has the squad to make history.

As well as Simon, City were also missing three other stars for that match - Tameka Butt, Elise Kellond-Knight, and captain Steph Catley - through injury or international duties.

"There are a lot of good teams as well as some very talent players in the W-League this time around, and in my mind it will be the most competitive season yet," Simon said.

"At Melbourne City we have a really well rounded team and I think it's fair to say we're confident of achieving great things once again.

"After winning three straight titles it only makes sense that every other side will be looking at us as the team to beat.

"If we can play to our ability each week then there is no reason in my mind why we can't make it four straight W-League titles."

Melbourne City's next match will be against league leaders Sydney FC in a rematch of last season's decider at AAMI Park on Friday night.
