Managing is ‘10 times better’ than playing, says Kewell

Socceroos great Harry Kewell has revealed his move into management has brought him more satisfaction than his storied playing career, claiming that calling the shots from the dugout is "10 times better".

The former Leeds, Liverpool and Galatasary attacker is widely regarded as one of Australia's greatest ever players with an on field career spanning 18 years, nearly 400 games and a Champions League winners medal.

Kewell made the move into management in 2015 with Watford's U-23 team, 18 months after he had called an end to his playing days.

English League Two side Crawley Town gave Kewell his first senior professional coaching position in 2017 and he helped them survive relegation despite a season of mixed results.

The 56-cap Socceroos legend took over the reigns at fellow League Two stragglers Notts County at the start of the current season and revealed in an interview with the BBC's Football Focus program that he is loving life in the coaches chair.

The 40-year-old revealed the move into management has helped him rediscover his love of the game after a long playing career which was blighted by injury.

"I look back on my career and I gave everything," Kewell said.

"There is nothing more that drives me to play. People always ask me, now that I'm a manager do I join in on sessions and I tell them I have no passion to do that anymore.

"(Managing) is ten times better. When players listen to your ideas, believe in those ideas and then successfully do it on the pitch is so rewarding.

"When you score a goal as a player the feeling in that one moment is unbelievable as you’re the one that everyone is cheering about.

"People have said nothing will match that, but now when I see my team score it brings me so much more joy."

It has been a tough start for Kewell at Notts County who sit precariously in 22nd position and at risk of relegation with only three wins and three draws from 14 games this season.

He had an acrimonious first match in charge of the Magpies when he was sent to the stands after receiving red card for dissent as his side suffered a 5-1 loss to Exeter City.

A run of four games without defeat at the end of September showed signs of life for the Kewell led Notts, but four losses from as many games this month has the historic club still battling for survival.

Kewell's Notts County take on Swindon Town on Sunday (AEDT) and will be desperate for three points as they attempt to climb off the bottom of the ladder.
