Boyle warning - don’t let him become Australia’s next Souttar

According to the Socceroos' clutch of Scottish-based players, Australia should be moving to cap Martin Boyle as quickly as possible or risk losing him – precisely the situation that happened with John Souttar, a player described a future English Premier League star.

Boyle, 25, has been included in the Socceroos' upcoming training camp in the United Arab Emirates. However, he isn't eligible for Australia's international clash against Kuwait on October 16 (AEST).

While that match is only a friendly and wouldn't tie Boyle to Australia anyway, it is notable that he has not made a decision about representing Australia or Scotland.

Hibernian team-mate Mark Milligan said that Boyle, as a genuine right-winger with exceptional ball control and crossing ability, offered something unique to the Socceroos.
"He's a bit different to what we already have and that caught my eye immediately. He'd give us a genuinely exciting option," he told The World Game.

"I think he could be very important for the national team going forward. He's at a good age, he's had a lot of good experiences here and he's a very good player."

Milligan admitted that when he first arrived at Hibs, he thought it was only himself and Jamie Maclaren who were eligible for the green and gold.

"The first thing the staff said to me was 'now we have three Aussie boys at the club' and I didn't get the joke at first," Milligan said.

"But I quickly soon found out that Martin had been monitored by the FFA for a while. He's a very, very good player and he's going through the eligibility process at the moment and it would be tremendous if we're able to get him."
Australia's chances appear to have been given a further boost after Boyle was overlooked by Scotland for next week's UEFA Nations League visit to Israel and a friendly against Portugal.

"Martin has been in great form over the last year or so but I just felt we are pretty rich in that position," Scotland manager Alex McLeish said.

"What will be, will be. If it is meant for Martin to play for Scotland, then it could happen. Watch this space. He has got to keep playing at that level. Australia may snatch him, but at the moment I have got some really good players in that position."

Remarkably, the Scotland squad contains another player who was eligible for Australia up until a few months ago.

Heart of Midlothian defender John Souttar, whose grandmother is from Australia, was only capped by Scotland in a competitive match last month, ending his chances of playing for the Socceroos.

And according to his team-mates at Hearts, Oliver Bozanic and Ben Garuccio, Souttar would have been every chance of being a starting member of Australia's AFC Asian Cup squad had he pledged his allegiance to Graham Arnold's side.

"John's had a fantastic start to this season. He's been such a solid figure for us at the back and there's no doubting he will be a star at international level," Bozanic said.

"Unfortunately for Australia, some pressure came for him to get called up by Scotland and they capped him in the UEFA Nations League. There was some real buzz around here about him getting called up for Australia and it's a shame it never materialised."

Garrucio said he believed that Souttar has an enormous future ahead of him and rued that Australia had missed out on an outstanding prospect.

"He's definitely the one that got away," Garrucio said.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you see him in the English Premier League very soon.

"He's one of the best in Scotland. I think he'd have been one of the best for Australia, because he has everything you could want in a central defender. It certainly makes you a bit nervous about losing out on Boyle, too."
