Arnold taking heed as Williams thumps on Socceroos' door

The case for uncapped Ryan Williams to be handed a Socceroos call-up is gathering steam, with the winger producing compelling consistency for Championship newcomers Rotherham this season.

With Australia coach Graham Arnold revealing last week that the 24-year-old was being assessed by himself and assistant Rene Meulensteen, Williams conjured another influential performance for the Millers in their 2-2 draw with relegated Stoke City over the weekend.

In his 10th league appearance of the season for the South Yorkshire side, Williams - who produced a memorable performance in last season’s play-off final to help seal promotion - had a hand in both goals, and almost conjured a third.

Injuries have previously hampered his hopes of a national team breakthrough during spells with Fulham and Barnsley, but the stars appear to be aligning for the west Australian.

“I’m in a good place with my club, I’m happy, I’m enjoying it and I’m at a good level,” Williams said.

“I’ve just got to keep playing well and if I do that it might make it hard for him (Arnold) not to pick me.

“If I was not to get called up this season at all I think that would be quite strange to be honest, but that’s just my view on it.”
The dilemma for Arnold in weighing up Williams’ credentials is that he’s awash with attacking wide players - with the likes of Mathew Leckie, Robbie Kruse and Daniel Arzani augmented by Awer Mabil, Ajdin Hrustic, Andrew Nabbout, Dimi Petratos and Socceroo-in-waiting Martin Boyle at his disposal.

The counterbalance to that is that every other Australian playing in the Championship - Mile Jedinak, Massimo Luongo, Jackson Irvine and Bailey Wright - are established squad members.

Williams worked previously under Meulensteen, when the Dutchman was in charge at Fulham, though he spent much of that spell either injured or on loan at Oxford.

“Our paths didn’t cross that much but obviously he has a wealth of experience and just as it would be great to work under Graham Arnold, it would also be good to work with Rene closely and pick his brain a bit also,” he added.

“He’s obviously worked with the best during his career and knows what it takes to improve a player.

“I think it’s very smart from Arnie to get such an experienced European coach on his team because his knowledge of the game over here is huge.”

Willians admits that his attacking instincts have been tempered a little so far this season, with Rotherham - lying 18th with 10 points from 10 games - sitting deep and playing largely on the counter-attack.
“We are defending a little bit more than last year because the teams we’re up against are obviously superior,” he said.

“Even though I want to get forward, get on the ball and run at players, I haven’t been able to do that as much this season as last because of the way we’ve had to play.

“I know Graham Arnold was in the crowd when we played Aston Villa a couple of games back, and hopefully I gave him cause to maybe have another look at me and maybe changed his mind a bit.

“Hopefully he’ll have seen the way we play is on the counter and away from home I’ve been like a second right back at times!

“But the Championship is a good level. You’re playing teams like Villa, Forest and Leeds and it’s really enjoyable.

“I feel quite comfortable at this level, not out of my depth at all.

“I don’t think we’ll go down but if I have to run back and defend my own box then that’s what I have to do to get a win or a point.

“With the injuries I’ve missed out on maybe three or four seasons of football and what’s arguably the most important time of my career.

“But everything happens for a reason and I know more about my body now having been injured.

“Other players might have had a bit of a head start on me and I feel I’m now doing a bit of catching up.”

Arnold is due to name his squad this week for the friendly against Kuwait in the Middle East on October 15.
