Aussies Abroad: Birthday boy Mooy stars in Palace scrap

Aaron Mooy earned man of the match plaudits in Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday (AEST).

Mooy, playing on his 28th birthday, was Huddersfield’s heartbeat against Palace - displaying an array of pinpoint passes and one vicious volley that cannoned back off the base of the post.

Despite the Socceroos star’s best efforts, the narrow defeat leaves the Terriers just one point above the relegation zone with fellow strugglers Burnley and West Ham United still yet to play.

Jackson Irvine meanwhile, scored his third goal of the season to help Hull City see off Ipswich Town 2-0 in the Championship.

The 25-year-old came on in the 68th minute and sealed all three points with a well-taken finish, after Jarrod Bowen put the Tigers in front early at the KC Stadium.

The win, Hull’s first in three games across all competitions, coincides with Irvine’s return to the squad after a troubling thigh injury and manager Nigel Adkins was pleased with his performance.

"Towards the end, the second goal we’ve gone and scored was really good play,” Adkins said.

"Jackson Irvine has showed fantastic desire and tenacity to out-muscle the defender and go for it."

Adkins’ men now sit 17th as a result, two points above the relegation zone ahead of Wednesday’s (AEST) clash away to Wigan Athletic.
Massimo Luongo was also on the winning side as Queens Park Rangers secured a 2-1 victory away to Bolton Wanderers.

Luongo played the full 90 minutes for the R’s to help ease the pressure on manager Steve McClaren after a run of four straight defeats to start the league season.

Relegation favourites Rotherham United continued their excellent start to life in the Championship with Ryan Williams in action in their 1-0 win over Frank Lampard’s Premier League-chasing Derby County.

Chelsea legend Lampard was given his marching orders from the technical area after complaining to referee Peter Bankes over a controversial decision.

Elsewhere, Mile Jedinak and James Meredith both came away with a point as Aston Villa and Millwall played out 1-1 draws against Blackburn Rovers and Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United respectively.

Harry Kewell breathed a sigh of relief after Notts County registered their first League Two point of the Socceroos legend's tenure with a 3-3 draw against Stevenage.

Despite taking the lead on three separate occasions, Notts were unable to hang on for the victory with Kewell citing fatigue for their downfall.
"We had a plan at the start of the game to get a point so we could get some confidence back into the team," Kewell said after the game.

"The way we have worked in spells has shown that we are looking good, so we just need to top our fitness up.

"All the players dug in deep so it’s just a shame we didn’t get three points - but I’m delighted we have a point to build on."
In Scotland, fellow Socceroos Mark Milligan and Jamie Maclaren were second-half substitutes in Hibernian’s 3-2 win over Kilmarnock, with the latter proving instrumental in the winner.

After Eamonn Brophy and Greg Stewart had rubbed out Hibs’ 2-0 lead before half-time, Maclaren won his side a penalty just five minutes after his introduction and Florian Kamberi made no mistake.

Neil Lennon’s outfit have moved up to fifth as a result and sit just two points behind defending champions Celtic, who were unable to defeat St. Mirren on Saturday (AEST).
Jesse Curran had no such luck however as Dundee FC suffered a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Steven Gerrard's Rangers at the Ibrox.

And it was a battle of the Aussies as Andy Rose’s Motherwell fell 1-0 at home to Oliver Bozanic’s Heart of Midlothian.

Bozanic played the last 10 minutes of the match, with Ben Garuccio an unused substitute as Hearts continued their perfect start to the league season.

Australia’s Asia-based contingent also had mixed results overnight, with recalled Socceroos goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak and Nagoya Grampus losing 4-3 to Jordy Buijs’ V-Varen Nagasaki in the J1 League.

Mitchell Duke came off the bench to help Shimizu S-Pulse seal their 3-2 victory over relegation-threatened Kashiwa Reysol.
Connor Chapman and Kwabena Appiah-Kubi unfortunately could not follow suit in the K League 1 as Pohang Steelers slumped 2-0 away to Ulsan Hyundai and Incheon United settled for a 0-0 draw with Suwon Bluewings.
