The Mariners are also understood to be considering making an offer for goalkeeper Ben Kennedy from Newcastle Jets as a replacement for the departing Paul Izzo.
Roux has made a tremendous comeback at the Mariners this season, after a shocking triple injury ended last season early for him.
He suffered a broken leg, torn ankle ligaments and a dislocated shoulder in a game against Melbourne City after he went up for the ball and got his foot caught in the turf.
Roux is an enormously popular figure at the Mariners, who has stood in as captain a couple of times this season when regular skipper Nick Montgomery has been unavailable.
And now he could get the job on a full-time basis, as early as next season, since there is major doubt around whether 35-year-old midfielder Montgomery will continue playing after this season.
Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp refused to comment on the contract negotiations with Roux, saying it was club policy not to talk about deals until they are done.
But The World Game has learned that discussions, on a multi-year deal for Roux, are basically complete and that his re-signing will be announced before the end of the season.
Central Coast, as a result of a poor run of recent form, have been dragged back into a battle to avoid the wooden spoon, which they picked up last season.
If they lose to current bottom-placed Adelaide United at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday, they will drop back to last place themselves.
The Mariners will need at least one goalkeeper for next season, with Izzo having recently decided to return to his old club Adelaide United.
The club's other goalkeeper, Ivan Necevski, is coming off contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen if he is still there next season.
Kennedy, who has played 114 A-League games for the Jets, was set to duel with Jack Duncan for the number one goalkeeper spot at Newcastle this season, but then sustained a torn Achilles tendon only days out from kick-off.
It ended the season for him, but the 30-year-old is back on track in training with the aim of making a comeback next season.
But with which club is the question.
The World Game understands the Mariners are looking closely at Kennedy. The goalkeeping coach there, Matthew Nash, used to be in the Newcastle playing squad alongside Kennedy and as such, would be a good judge of his ability.
Kennedy's agent, Joel Grenell, told The World Game he was seeking to find out Newcastle's intentions regarding the player, who is coming off contract. He wouldn't discuss the rival club that was interested in Kennedy.
"There hasn't been a contract put on the table by Newcastle at this stage and we've got interest from another club, so we've got to step up talks with Newcastle, and the other club we're talking to, because Ben needs to sort out his future ASAP," Grenell said.
"I've made contact with the Jets to let me know where they're at in terms of offering Ben an extension, so it's in their hands now. I've let them know another club is interested, so it's up to them to come back to me and make an offer or go another way.
"Ben's a number one 'keeper in many people's eyes, so it's no surprise clubs are starting to want to talk."
Meanwhile, defender Jacob Pepper is set to re-sign with Brisbane Roar.
