Mooy likens Huddersfield's philosophy to the Socceroos

There’s a buzz around Huddersfield Town’s John Smith Stadium over the impact Australia star Aaron Mooy might have this season, but the gifted midfielder isn’t letting the expectation turn his head.

Having caught the eye of many during a series of pre-season fixtures - including an impressive 45-minute cameo against Liverpool – Mooy is being touted by the Yorkshire club’s fans as a go-to-man ahead of his Championship debut against Brentford on Sunday (AEST).
Mooy, though, is simply relishing being at a club with a possession-based philosophy under German coach David Wagner, which echoes that of the Socceroos, as he begins his season-long loan spell from Manchester City – the English giant which snapped him up from sister club Melbourne City, after his record breaking year of 11 goals and 20 assists.

"The coach’s philosophy is to play on the ground and that’s what I want ... it’s very similar to the national team," Mooy said.

"There's a bit of difference in the formation, but the main philosophy is very similar. I already feel part of the group and have been training very hard getting ready for the weekend.

"I feel like I fit in well, but the Championship is a different competition and we will see how it goes ... hopefully I improve and become a more complete player.

"The squad is very strong … we have good players all over the pitch. There’s huge competition for places and that’s what makes the training so intense.

"It’s easily the toughest schedule I’ve had, double sessions almost every day and it’s a lot different to what I amused to."

While the carrot of Premier League football may be dangling in front of him should he excel at Huddersfield, Mooy isn’t getting all starry-eyed – and would rather concentrate on the here and now.
"My only aim this year is to keep improving and become the best player I can be," he said.

"I am not thinking too much about the Premier League … that’s my mentality. I am happy to play football anywhere, so long as I am learning and improving. That’s where I am focusing all my energy.

"If one day I can play at the highest level - that’s the goal, but I am not thinking that if I have a big season at Huddersfield, then I have a chance to play in the EPL. I don't think like that."

He has taken great confidence, though, in joining Manchester City's star-encrusted playing roster.

"Being signed by them … they are a massive club, and for them to see something in me, and believe in me is a big motivation to do better and succeed," Mooy said.

Though deployed as No.10 in the A-League at Western Sydney Wanderers and then Melbourne City, Wagner has been playing Mooy as a No.6 so far – and he’s more than happy with that.

“I don’t mind, so long as I am playing. I’m enjoying it ... I get to place nice football," he said.

"I like to play along the ground, and to feet, and as long as the ball is not sailing offer my head - I am happy.

"Every coach has their own way of thinking and under all of them I have improved … maybe not in all areas, but in certain areas and that's something I'm constantly trying to build on."

Having spent a season at Bolton as a rookie, and then two years at St Mirren, before his return to Australia four years back – Mooy is keen to show how much he has learned in his second coming to the UK.

“When I was first over in England at Bolton I was playing with the youth team and reserve team, and I didn’t get the experience in men’s football – but now it’s a different story," he said.

"The A-League has given me a great platform to develop and I feel like I am a much better player now having played in the A-League for four seasons."

Having fellow Socceroos player Jason Davidson in the same dressing room has helped Mooy settle in that much faster.

“It's good to have Jason around. He's been helping me with the little things and that's been a big plus for me.”
