The Roar are at the top of the table by a solitary point, with Western Sydney Wanderers still to play this weekend, but for Newcastle the draw represents another step in their mini-revival after their fantastic win at home to Melbourne City last weekend.

Brisbane took the lead when the lethal Jamie Maclaren pounced on the rebound from his own penalty to lash home for his 11th of a stellar season.

Brandon Borrello had been fouled by the clumsy Nick Cowburn and although Mark Birighitti's save was a good one, the ball fell fortuitously to Maclaren, who didn't waste the second opportunity.

Things looked ominous for the Jets but two goals in the space of four minutes changed all that.

Some lovely lead up play down the right ended with Mitch Cooper glancing a header past Michael Theo - the 35-year-old had strayed into no-man's-land, leaving Cooper with the whole goal at his mercy.

Brisbane needed a cool head to deal with a rejuvenated Jets outfit, who buoyed by their upset win last weekend and their swift equaliser on the road, banging on the door.

Instead, Brisbane suffered a brain explosion.

Corey Brown stretched to head away a dangerous cross from the left, but instead stuck out an arm and blatantly handled the ball - it's hard to fathom what he was thinking, or whether he was thinking at all.

Nevertheless it was a Newcastle penalty, and Milos Trifunovic is as cool as they come from the spot.

He stuttered, started, stopped and propped before rolling the ball past Theo to notch his ninth goal of the season.

Brisbane came out in the second half and piled on the pressure, without really testing Birighitti.

John Aloisi threw on Henrique, for Borrello, and Steven Lustica for Dimitri Petratos as the Brisbane coach tried to plot a path to an equaliser.

They found it when North's attempted cross, after a neat pass by Corona, nicked off Enver Alivodic and past the stranded Birighitti.

Matteo Poljak hit the post with a beautiful curling effort, and then right down the other end Lustica was denied by a superb Birighitti save, the Newcastle keeper flying through the air to touch the Roar midfielder's shot onto the post.

Brisbane finished the stronger, but they couldn't steal the points.
