Jurman glad to have Carney on Sydney FC's side

Sydney FC defender Matt Jurman said players play and the coach and club management look after the rest, and that if Graham Arnold wants David Carney in the squad for tonight's A-League clash with Adelaide United that was fine with him.

Some critics have questioned the wisdom of Sydney signing Carney, who has been to many clubs and had associations which sometimes did not end so well.

Newcastle Jets released him from the final four months of his contract last week even though they weren't getting a player in return from Sydney.
But when asked what he thought about Carney joining the team, Jurman said there was player movement in football all the time and that he was looking forward to the former Socceroos utility boosting Sydney's chances in both the A-League and AFC Asian Champions League.

"I've only known David from playing against him, but he's a teammate now so I'm sure I'll get to know him well," Jurman told The World Game.

"He's had a good career and he's been probably the most dangerous player for Newcastle this year, so to get him on our side is a positive thing. He'll be good for us, particularly with the busy schedule coming up once the ACL starts.

"I don't know what happened there with him and Newcastle, so I can't really comment, but players switching clubs mid-season happens in football all the time and I'm sure it won't be the last time it happens."

Jurman said footballers naturally trusted their coach and club management to make good decisions on recruitment based not only on playing ability but also the potential signing's personality.

"Yeah, it's got nothing to do with me and the rest of the players, it's what 'Arnie' wants and if he thinks someone can come in and help the team move forward then that's fine with us and he'll do what he has to do to get him here," Jurman said.

"Sometimes coaches like to speak to the player to find out what his motivations are and how he'll integrate with the rest of the boys in the change-room. It's part of their job and there's nothing unusual about that."

Carney has been included in the squad for Sydney's vital clash against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium tonight. Whether he starts the game or comes off the bench remains to be seen.

Successive losses to Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar have seen the Sky Blues drop to fifth place.

They can rise to as high as third if they beat Adelaide and other results go in their favour, but a loss would see them drop to sixth and Adelaide go one spot ahead of them.

"Yeah, it's a big game and we've trained well this week and we're confident going in," Jurman said.

"Hopefully we can play well, create the chances, score goals and take the three points home to make it a big weekend for us."

Asked what Sydney most needed to improve on from their 3-1 home loss to Brisbane, Jurman replied: "At 1-1 we had a lot of the ball, but I think some people were too eager to go forward and that left space at the back, so we've got to tighten that up and make sure it doesn't happen again.

"Brisbane got us a bit in transition and Adelaide can quickly get forward as well. They've got some players in great form and they're also playing very well as a team, so we've got to make sure we turn up to play as a team.

"We have to play to our game plan and keep it tight and make sure we don't give their dangerous players any space."
