Izzo reddy to fill Liam's void at the Mariners

Paul Izzo is way too busy dealing with the reality of stopping shots as a rookie A-League goalkeeper for Central Coast Mariners to spend too much time watching so-called reality TV.

But he admits he did at least check in on The Bachelorette series to see what all the fuss was about regarding Michael Turnbull and his exaggerations on the subject of his football career.

"I'd heard what he'd said about the Socceroos and stuff and it got me interested," Izzo said. "So I watched a bit and that was it. I saw enough and heard enough, that's all I needed to see."

Izzo was asked about Turnbull because of the story that surfaced last week that the Mariners might be interested in signing up the 34-year-old.

It was, of course, pure fantasy, but at least it gave the Mariners players a chuckle.

"Someone made  it up," Izzo said. "I don't pay much attention to all of that stuff anyway. We all had a good laugh about it, you know, but, if he wants to come, he can come!"

That won't be happening, of course, and young Izzo remains there after being thrust into the position as main man between the sticks at the club following Liam Reddy's exile. The veteran goalkeeper had been critical of the team's playing style under coach Tony Walmsley.

The club is still negotiating a mutual termination agreement with Reddy, and Izzo, who is just 20, will play his fourth game for Central Coast against Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

"I obviously wasn't expecting to come into the team so quickly, but that's football," Izzo said. "It's hard for me to fill the massive spot Liam left and that was probably the biggest pressure that was on my shoulders."

Izzo said that because of the dramatic circumstances under which he had been promoted to the top spot he initially felt self-conscious because of the spotlight on him, but that he had always been hard on himself anyway.

"The first game was obviously the hardest one to get through, but now I'm in a bit of rhythm and the game against Wellington last weekend was probably my best one, so I'll use that confidence and keep building each week as it goes," he said. "Hopefully it gets better and better.

Izzo said he was grateful to Reddy for his help when the two were together at the club and for his continued support.

"I've got massive respect for Liam and how he treated me when I came into the club," Izzo said. "He made me feel extremely welcome in my first few weeks. The hardest thing for me about all of this was replacing him.

"He's still been helping me as well. Before the game against Sydney he sent me a text saying good luck and everything, so that made me feel a lot better."

The Mariners take on Newcastle Jets this weekend in the the M1 derby this weekend, a game Izzo is looking forward to.

"When I made my debut for Adelaide at home I played against Victory and there is a big rivalry there, so that felt different," he said. "And this week people are talking a lot about the derby. We want to show more character in this game.

"It's obviously different to all of the other games for the players and it's important to the fans as well."
