Socceroos dominant in qualifier victory against Kyrgyzstan

Australia were far too good for Kyrgyzstan in Canberra, recording a 3-0 win at GIO Stadium in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Aaron Mooy was the star of the show, conducting the Socceroos orchestra like a man of far more experience than only 10 caps his country.

His passing was a joy, and he set the tempo from start to finish.

Mile Jedinak's first half penalty and Tim Cahill's good finish early in the second half ensured this was no bump on the road to Russia. Ildar Amirov's own goal added a little sheen to the scoreline.

Much of the nearly 20,000-strong crowd was stuck outside close to kick-off as traffic jams plagued the nation's capital, but Australia started as brightly as they should against a side ranked 124th in the world.

But for all the bluff and bluster of Ange Postecoglou's team selection, featuring tall timber in Cahill and Tomi Juric, and a debutant at left back in James Meredith, they still had to find the back of the net.

And for a while, it looked as if it it wouldn't be their night.
Kyrgyzstan 'keeper Pavel Matiash made a fabulous save in the second minute to deny Cahill, a stop which set the tone for the first half hour.

Matiash reacted superbly to acrobatically palm away Cahill's header at goal, and on the quarter-hour Matiash was sharp as a tack to race off his line and block Mooy one-on-one.

It could have been very different if Kyrgyzstan were awarded a penalty on 18 minutes.

Viktor Maier was surging into the box and under pressure from Meredith, he lost his footing as he went to shoot. Maybe it was 50/50, but you get the sense Australia got away with one.

The Socceroos brushed off the scare to continue the assault on the Kyrgyzstan goal.

Massimo Luongo and Cahill were both denied by Matiash, before Nathan Burns replaced the injured Juric.

The excellent Mooy had a volley superbly blocked by Azamat Baimatov, who flung himself in front of Mooy's crisp shot.
Mark Milligan somehow failed to make proper contact from almost in the goal, after Matiash made another save, this time to deny Burns. How Milligan didn't roll the ball the three yards he needed to in order to score, is anyone's guess.

But it mattered not as Burns, who added more thrust to the Socceroos' side after his introduction, was taken down by Islam Shamshiev.

Jedinak, as expected, made no mistake.

Mooy's pass early in the second half deserved a goal and Cahill made no mistake, tucking away his 42nd goal in green and gold.

The enthusiastic crowd was full of applause for local-lad Tom Rogic, who came off the bench to replace the skipper Jedinak.

Kyrgyzstan finally showed some impetus in attack and won a succession of corners, none of which created any fuss for Socceroos goalkeeper Adam Federici.

When Amirov headed Mooy's corner past his own 'keeper, it was job done for Australia, the only sour note the substitution of the lively substitute Burns, with a suspected knee injury.
