Burns urges Socceroos to lift as World Cup stakes raised

Striker Nathan Burns expects Australia to go up a gear in their bid to reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup but refutes any suggestion the intrepid Socceroos are too attack-minded for their own good.

Burns, who plays his club football for FC Tokyo in the J.League, is in Canberra for the Socceroos' World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan at GIO Stadium.

The Australians must at all costs take the three points if they are to win their qualifying group ahead of Jordan, who beat Ange Postecoglou's men 2-0 last time out.
The Socceroos play Bangladesh in Dhaka in another qualifier five days later.

The surprise defeat in Amman raised questions about the Australians' gung-ho approach, which makes them vulnerable to the counter-attack, something the quick Jordanians exploited to the full.

But Burns, who has an excellent chance of starting after the late withdrawal of the ill Mathew Leckie, would have none of it.

"I don't think we are too attack-minded at all," Burns said.

"We've been going okay in the last 18 months, remember.

"The reason we sometimes get caught by fast counter-attacks has nothing to do with our formation or our style.

"We just did not play at our best in Amman. So we just need to pick our game and play that 15 per cent better and everything will be fine.

"Amman was a wake-up call that showed us that in football you can lose any game if you drop your guard. We've got to be wary of that."

Postecoglou was bullish about his team's overall performance when it was put to him that the Socceroos may have developed a weakness that could prove costly down the track.

"I don't think it is a problem, we lost one game and before that it was working very well," Postecoglou said.

"I don't think we are vulnerable to the counter-attack. We play as we can and as we have shown the last 12 months. It is very hard for opposing teams to create against us and score against us.
"I certainly do not see it (the perceived vulnerability) that way. A utopia system that everybody wants us to play does not exist. Every system has its frailties and fragile elements but I believe the way we play our football will make us successful and we'll continue to do it that way."
Burns, who has 16 caps to his credit, is hoping for a rare start for Australia.

"Like anybody else, I want to play as much as possible so hopefully I'll get the nod," he said.

"We've got to make the most of the fact that were at home and get some goals.

"The result in Jordan was not up to standard but to be honest we did not play that bad.

"Okay we did not get the three points so the message is we need to control games and finish off opponents."

Burns is enjoying a positive experience in Japan after leaving Wellington Phoenix at the end of the last A-League season.

His contract with sixth-placed Tokyo is up in June 2016 but indications are that his stay could be extended to December.

"The J.League is a very technical league and physically demanding," Burns said.

"You just have to be physically up for it and be super fit because there are some very strong players in Japan.

"Obviously it is good to be among the team so early although it took me a bit of time to adapt and adjust to a new team in a new league.

"We have an Italian coach (Massimo Ficcadenti) which of course means he is very strict on the tactical side of things.

"He had to make sure I knew all that kind of stuff before he threw me into games. Once I got all that sorted it was all good."

"With Tokyo I play up front as one of two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation. My role with the Socceroos squad can be a little different but usually very similar really."
