Broich delighted with Brisbane's fresh formula

Brisbane Roar star Thomas Broich believes that a tweak in the team's playing style has brought the best out of the many gifted individuals that make up the three-time A-League champions.

Broich said Brisbane's immediate future was promising after a disappointing 2014-2015 thanks largely to the greater freedom new coach John Aloisi has given his players.

The German playmaker, who won the Johnny Warren Medal as player of the year in 2012 and 2014, is still the wonderful player we all admire but he may not be as influential as he used to be when Brisbane were in their pomp.

Yet he's not concerned because Aloisi's methods are enabling midfielders Miguel Angel Garcia Perez-Roldan, better known as Corona, and Matt McKay to be in a position to dictate games.

Brisbane are second on the A-League ladder a point behind Sydney FC after the two teams played out a tepid goalless draw on Friday evening.

"John is doing a great job," Broich said.

"We've had a good pre-season which is paying off. We're very fit and pretty structured in what we're doing and our team game is benefitting the individual.

"If we look at the way John has got us playing this season after bringing in a few ideas we have a new style but there are a lot of similarities with the way we played three years ago.

"We are trying to share around the playmaking load and play more positionally which means I stay wider.

"Since I am playing more on the left I am not as involved as much as I used to be. But our new game is making the team stronger and also bringing out the best in the individual.

"It is helping Miguel and Matty, who are having a great season. Matty's seeing a lot of the ball and enjoying a greater freedom on the park especially if we can dictate the tempo of a match.

"I think Miguel's position as a defensive midfielder works well the way it is. His decision making is unbelievable and it is hard to get the ball off him even when he's under pressure.

"He's the perfect man for the No 6 position."

Corona, who has played nine seasons for Almeria in Spain before moving to Australia in the off-season, has caught the eye with his peripheral vision and immaculate passing and has more than made up for the departure of defensive midfielder Luke Brattan who is on loan to Bolton Wanderers after securing a transfer to Manchester City in October.

Broich and his teammates failed to leave their mark on the weekend match against Sydney largely because, he claims, the home team may have been playing for a share of the points.

"We're not happy with a draw because playing for a point is not the way we want to play the game," he said.

"At the same time Sydney were setting up not to lose the game.

"It was tempting to attack a little bit more but in the end we would have risked losing on a free-kick or whatever.

"I think we played a smart game in Sydney. We played it safe and we were hoping for a lucky goal but we did not get it so all in all we were happy to settle for a draw. But things are promising already."

A sterner test for Brisbane will come when they face champions Melbourne Victory in January.

"Victory are still the team to beat, absolutely, even though they have had a slow start to the league," he said.

"They seem to be as strong as last year with Gui Finkler and Besart Berisha firing up front and with a very solid defence."

Broich, who has one season left in his contract after this one, said he was still as keen on playing the game as he was when he burst onto the Australian scene in 2010-2011 and helped Brisbane to their first of three championships in four seasons.

"I'm not getting tired at all and I still have plenty of enthusiasm for the game, perhaps not so much after the match against Sydney which was a bit ugly," he said.

"I like the way we are heading. I'm fully fit again and enjoying it with a great group of players around me. You know, being a footballer is the best job in the world."
