Oarful experience leaves Tommy in a debut daze

Tommy Oar’s full Championship debut for new club for Ipswich Town was quite literally a forgettable experience – with the dazed Australia winger playing most of the first half against Huddersfield with concussion.

Left groggy and nursing a bloodied nose after an early collision, Oar sleep walked through most of the first 45 minutes against Jason Davidson’s team two weeks back before being withdrawn at the break with barely any recollection of his part in proceedings.

Unsurprisingly, Oar's performance reflected his state of bewilderment after he was poleaxed by keeper Jed Steer in a thumping which left him with whiplash and out of contention until his likely return for Sunday’s clash against Cardiff City.

“I only remember a couple of minutes of the game, but I saw the replay of the collision and it was quite a heavy one," Oar said.

“It took a bit of a toll but I am back in training now and hopefully available for the weekend.

“There was a long ball over the top, I was chasing it and the keeper came out and missed the ball and ran strong into me instead."

A claret-stained and confused Oar was treated on the sidelines before returning to fray.

“I came back on after a couple of minutes but the rest is just a blur, other than a couple of dead balls which I took. Apart from that, there's really nothing," he added.

With his mind in a flog, Oar’s body followed suit and he was some way off his best, with boss Mick McCarthy revealing afterwards that his hazy performamce was purely down to concussion.

“The boss joked the next day and told me it wasn’t my best performance," said Oar.

"It's always hard when you come to a new club, and these types of things don't help. It's frustrating.”

With sport under the microscope for head injuries, Ipswich’s medicos put Oar through a number of cognitive tests to assess the possibility of any ongoing concerns.

“I was with the doctors afterwards for a few hours and they took me through a protocol for concussion injuries and I was told mine was a classic case," Oar added. "It’s not something you can take too many risks with.”

Oar impressed against Manchester United in his debut in the League Cup, came off the bench against Blackburn and is keen to get his Championship career up and running after joining the Tractor Boys brimming with expectation.

He has been playing on both wings so far in his fledging Ipswich career – and is happy with either role after also playing across centre midfield during his five years with Utrecht in the Eredivisie.

“Against Manchester United, I played the whole game on the right and thought it was my best performance so far, and I like to have that freedom to cut inside,” he said.

“But I am comfortable with either role, and also in the midfield.”

He is also on a mission for his country after the disappointment and frustration of the shock 2-0 loss in Jordan going into November's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh.

“We need to show a little bit more desperation and quality in the right areas but at the same time not dwell too much on the Jordan match,” he said.

“It’s a about learning from it and moving on and getting that confidence back straight away. We just need to get back to what we were doing before, which was getting us good results.”
