5 things we learned in Round 3 of the A-League

This season's A-League is only three rounds old but each week we learn more and more. It was all action once again in Round 3, with the Sydney Derby only part of the story.

The World Game takes a look at what, exactly, we learned in the round of matches just gone.

1. Sorry Kevin, the Jets do have the wood on Victory

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat blew up deluxe at the suggestion of a Newcastle Jets hoodoo.

"You can suggest all you please but I truly don't believe in it. Our performance didn't warrant to get beaten tonight," he said, after his side's 1-0 loss on Friday night.
But that's not strictly relevant when discussing whether or not Victory has a problem with the Jets.

The facts are harsh: Victory hasn't won at Hunter Stadium for six years, when Muscat himself was in the side.

David Carney's super-strike on Friday night ensured the run continued.

2. David Carney is back

It seems not long ago that Carney was flying down the right wing for Sydney FC in the A-League's formative years, earning the nickname "the white Pele".

A varied overseas club career didn't hinder his opportunities in green and gold, where his left-footedness (and not much else) made him a left-back in the eyes of Graham Arnold, Pim Verbeek and Holger Osieck.

The 2011 AFC Asian Cup and his mistake in the final against Japan highlighted his lack of natural defensive instincts, but now, at Newcastle Jets - where he seemed destined for the scrapheap just months ago in Nathan Tinkler's last hurrah as owner - he has been restored to his full attacking glory.

Carney was the best player on the park against Victory, where he showed his full gamut of tricks and flicks.
Mazy runs, pinpoint crosses, volleys, and one arrowing shot past Danny Vukovic that won the game was a good night's work.

At only 31, there is much to come from this hugely talented attacker.

3. Sky Blues are the kings of the Sydney derby

Milos Ninkovic's late winner sealed the fate of the 10th Sydney derby, which now has gone the way of Sydney FC four of the past five games. The other was a draw.

The derby has fast become one of the big ticket items on the sporting calendar, and it is those clad in sky blue that have had the last laugh lately.
The last Wanderers win in the marquee fixture came at Pirtek Stadium in January last year, that gave the new boys on the block victory in three of the first five editions.

It has been a long time between drinks now though for Tony Popovic and his charges.

4. Wellington may go but it is an asset

Reports have surfaced that Wellington Phoenix could, at the expiration of its licence at the end of the season, be replaced by a third Sydney team.
The future of the Phoenix►Fozz believes time may be up for Wellington Phoenix FC in the Hyundai A-League as talk of a third Sydney-based club continue. Do you think Phoneix should stay? Whether another team in the New South Wales capital is a good idea is a discussion for another day, but what is certain is that Phoenix will be a loss, and that it won't go quietly.

Phoenix, under the stewardship of Ernie Merrick, finished fourth last season and played some very stylish football, driven on by the classy Roly Bonevacia and a Johnny Warren medal-winning season from Nathan Burns.

Now, with Jeffrey Sarpong spearheading the attack, it is doing much the same, as was evidenced in the 3-2 win against Brisbane Roar.

5. The state league is a decent nursery, but where are the rest?

There is a dearth of recent state league graduates in this season's A-League, and on this weekend's evidence, there should be more.

Blake Powell scored 20 goals in just15 games for APIA Leichhardt in the NSW NPL last season, and translated that form into scoring Wellington's late winner against Brisbane, after he came off the bench. Powell returned to the state league to rebuild his career after scoring three goals in 18 games during a brief stint at Sydney FC.

His former APIA team-mate, Marc Warren made eight appearances at Sydney FC in season 2013-2014. He was discarded after that solitary season.

A superb season for APIA saw him given another shot though, and he was excellent on his return to the starting line-up though, in Perth Glory's 3-1 home win against Adelaide United.

So, where are the rest? Dan Heffernan went from Heidelberg United to Central Coast Mariners at the age of 28, while Wellington is clearly a believer in the state league because after signing Powell, it went back to NSW for Troy Danaskos (Sydney Olympic) and Dylan Fox (Bonnyrigg White Eagles).

However, there is an abundance of talent in the state leagues who just need an opportunity at the highest level.
