Meredith content with being in the Socceroos fold

Australia’s newest recruit James Meredith knows he probably won't any game time in Friday’s morning's (AEDT) 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Jordan, but he is just grateful for the chance to make an impression on coach Ange Postecoglou.

At 27, the left-back, who has piloted an unglamorous path through England’s lower leagues, is aiming to become a late bloomer by staking a claim for a constant place in a Socceroos squad well on its way to securing its passage to the final phase of qualifying for Russia 2018.

The Bradford City player, and a fan of South Melbourne in his youth, has already been entranced by the professionalism of a set-up he has long dreamed of being part of.

“The training is very good, everything's professional and spot on. It's exactly how the manager wants it, it's the most professional setup I've seen and been involved with,” Meredith said.

"It's fantastic to be involved - it's something I've always aspired to doing and dreamt of doing.

“To be on the training pitch with the players I've looked up to and seen on the telly over the years, through the Asian Cup or even the World Cup, it's a real delight for me.”

His first impression of Postecoglou's curriculum of precise passing and incessant pressing has been equally favourable.

"I haven't had that much experience with him but he seems a fantastic coach," he said.

"You can see the way he plays, it's total football - it's sharp, you've got to really think all the time, you've got to be focused. Everything's so organised and professional."

While he is understudy to Jason Davidson in the clash between the top two teams in group B, Meredith was in two minds over whether the chance of a call-up had passed him by.

“I thought I might have been on the radar, especially last season when we beat Chelsea 4-2 in the FA Cup,” Meredith said.

“I'd been in good form for quite a while, being in England for 11 years - I thought I might have gone off the radar a little bit.

“They're more concentrating on bringing young players from home. I'm just really happy to be given an opportunity.”

Meredith believes he may offer a point of difference for Postecoglou in a position Davidson has all but made his own.

“I like to get forward, I like to get it down and play. I like to take pride in not being beaten by the right winger," he said.

“It's very early stages - I'd just like to do the best I can and see where things go. I'm certainly not expecting anything.

“First of all I'll have to adjust to the way Ange plays and trains. All I can do is what I've always done and that's show a lot of desire.

“Aziz Behich and Jason are very good players, both of them, especially Jason, so I'll just do my normal day to day things and we'll see what happens.”

Harbouring ambitions to return at some pint to play for one of his hometown Melbourne teams, either Victory or City, Meredith said “my generation was different because it was almost when the A-League was just forming, so there was a bit of uncertainty."

“I had to stay in England because it wasn't fully developed at that point; it was only when the A-League was starting.

“I think the best path now is definitely to go through the A-League - it's a good setup, and it’s very commercial.

“And if you do break through and you can get that exposure then the opportunities to move overseas and develop as a player or be part of the national team - they're perfect now.

“Growing up me as a kid the only team I ever wanted to play for was South Melbourne.

"I'm very grateful and I feel blessed to be where I am now, that's still the thing I want to do though - obviously South Melbourne are in a different division but I'd like to play for one of the Melbourne teams certainly.”

Meredith said he has done it the hard way on a long road to recognition.

“I got released from Derby County when I was 20 and like so many young players with no experience, I ended up a way down until I could find a level to get experience," he said.

“I got that experience at Telford in the Conference North and through performances I built my way to the Conference. Then through performances at York City I got my way to League Two then got promoted to League One."

“My aim is to get promoted with Bradford and who knows what could happen there. I want to get promoted through all the leagues before returning home."
