Contreras is currently in hospital recovering under observation, with doctors saying the 37 year-old’s condition is non-life threatening.
The match was played in Santa Cruz at high altitude which can cause players to collapse due to a lack of oxygen.

Former Chile legend Ivan Zamorano personally selected Contreras who played for Chile 67 times.

Sergio Vargas, a goalkeeper who played 10 times for Chile was the first to reach Contreras and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

“Thank God I was able to give quick and effective assistance,” Vargas said.

“It was difficult. We were all scared. I ran towards him, did what was needed. Pablo was not in a good way. I feared for his life. The players were very affected. Thank God he is okay.”
