Hoole hopes for the big time under Graham Arnold

Andrew Hoole is hoping Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold has a similar impact on his career to what he had on the careers of Mat Ryan, Trent Sainsbury, Bernie Ibini and Mustafa Amini.

All four of those players played under Arnold in the A-League, and all four have gone on to play overseas. Ryan and Sainsbury are also established as Socceroos.

Hoole, 21, wants to eventually play overseas as well. He left Newcastle Jets at the end of last season to join Sydney FC and said Arnold's record of developing young players was a big reason he made the switch.

"I caught up with 'Arnie' late last season, while I was still at Newcastle, and he told me a lot of good things about Sydney FC and assured me that if I signed at the club everything I needed for my game would be there for me," Hoole said.

"Arnie said he would develop my game. He aspires to get young players ready to go overseas if that's what they want to try to do and he did that with Mat Ryan, Trent Sainsbury, Mustafa Amini and Bernie Ibini and maybe one or two others as well.

Hoole said that as much as he wanted to try his luck overseas he was determined not to make the mistake of going too soon and ending up at an unsuitable club or warming the bench.

"Playing overseas has got to be one of your main goals as a player," he said. "That's why you play football, to make it to the highest level that you can, but I'm at Sydney at the moment and I need to work hard here first or I won't be in a good position to achieve what I want to achieve."

Hoole said Arnold had been working on all facets of his game at training and in trial matches.

"We're working on defensive positioning and attacking positioning and things like that, just little things in my game to help me here and there," he said. "It's more about structure and what to do defensively and where to be when our team has the ball."

Hoole moved around a bit in the Newcastle line-up and may be deployed in several positions at Sydney as well.

"When I first came here I played as a number 10, just in behind the striker," Hoole said. "Later I went back to the left and in training in the past few weeks I've switched between the left and the right, so I've mainly been used on the wing or as a number 10.

One part of Hoole's game he is particularly keen to improve is goal-scoring. He scored just one goal in 50 games for the Jets and that was a penalty - coincidentally against Sydney in Newcastle last season.

"Arnie is helping me a lot in that area as well," he said. "Obviously it was a factor last season, I didn't get enough goals, but I'll be looking to rectify that this season and bang in a few goals. I'm working hard at training to make sure that happens.

"Shooting practice is one thing, but I'm also working on my positioning in the front third and the timing of runs and things like that. Working on where to be at certain times in the match, so that I'm in the best place to take advantage of the ball coming to me."
