That's Amor! Coach's tactical freedom the key for Carrusca

Adelaide United playmaker Marcelo Carrusca urged fans not to read too much into his side's FFA Cup 3-1 defeat to arch rival Melbourne Victory because good times are just around the corner.

Holder United crashed out of the competition after surrendering meekly to the A-League champion in a one-sided quarter-final.
But Carrusca, who scored Adelaide's solitary goal through a late penalty, said the tactical freedom given to the players by new coach Guillermo Amor will make the Reds ultra-competitive when the league kicks off on Thursday 8 October.

The Reds will have an instant opportunity to avenge the cup defeat when it entertains Victory in Round 1 at Adelaide Oval.

"Josep Gombau's departure last season took us by surprise," Carrusca said.

"Even though Guillermo was at the club and we trained with him every day when he took over it was like having a new coach so it was difficult for us players.

"We have not changed our playing style but Guillermo has introduced a different concept and a new mentality to our game.

"With Josep we had many rules we had to follow on the pitch but with Guillermo we are free to use our instincts.

"This is the main difference between the two coaches.

"I personally love the greater (tactical) freedom Guillermo has given us and I'm sure my teammates feel the same way.

"Any coaching change is hard on the players and it takes time to adapt but we are sure that it will be for the better."

Carrusca acknowledged that Victory was the better team at AAMI Park although he lamented the absence of key players Bruce Djite and Pablo Sanchez.

He also said referee Peter Green "did not have his best day".

"Victory have a strong team and we have no excuses for our defeat, we just have to work hard so by the time the league starts we'll be in the best condition to beat them," Carrusca said.

"Yes they are very good but they will not win every game and we feel we can beat them in Adelaide on 9 October.

"We have to learn from our mistakes and I am convinced that if we play to our potential we will have another strong season.

"We believe in his team and what we can do and the cup defeat will not change that.

"We want to have another good season in which we play well and reach the finals.

"I have confidence in this group."
