Lustica bags a hat-trick as Roar nets 8 in pre-season clash

Brisbane Roar finally has something to smile about after thrashing a Queensland National Premier League (NPL) Under-23 side 8-0 in a pre-season match.

Steven Lustica netted a hat-trick for Roar inside the first 39 minutes of the contest, clinically finishing off two slick passing movements and scoring a penalty, as Brisbane raced to a 5-0 half-time lead.

Although the NPLQLD U23 All-Stars side rallied in the second-half, it couldn’t quite match a Roar side which is clearly amping up its preparations for the 2015-2016 A-League season.

Roar coach John Aloisi said his side's start was an improvement after last week’s scoreless pre-season draw with Newcastle Jets.

"What we lacked last week was penetrating against Newcastle. Our forward runs caused problems – I was quite happy with that today. That was the main thing we wanted to see," Aloisi said.

Aloisi said Lustica has embraced the new structures the coach has been implementing since taking over the Roar job in June.

"Lustica's combinations were good," Aloisi said.

"When Matt McKay, Broich, Lustica and Solorzano link up, it’s actually dangerous.

"They are so close together, the little one-twos and the third-man runs are hard to track and that worked really well in the first half."

While Lustica was happy with his performance, the 24 year-old's focus is on continuing to improve for Roar.

"Goals are always something that I can offer in midfield," Lustica said.

"If I can score from midfield, that what’s the game is about. But I also want to cement my spot in my team, keep working hard, keep developing and keep improving. They are my goals for the season."

Brisbane plays Central Coast Mariners next weekend in another pre-season clash, before the A-League season opener away to Western Sydney Wanderers on 8 October.
