Football Federation Australia will commemorate the anniversary of the Socceroos' historic shootout victory over the Uruguayans, to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 32 years, with a special dinner on the field of play at ANZ Stadium on Monday 16 November.
The moment when John Aloisi scored that penalty in the shootout to break a long World Cup qualification drought has been etched into Australian sporting folklore and is one of the most memorable moments in the nation's sporting history.
This special anniversary dinner will feature the then head coach of the Socceroos, who will return to Australia for the first time since taking the team to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, as well as members of that Socceroos squad.
The event will also honour FFA chairman Frank Lowy, as his 12-year tenure comes to and end, as well as the long-standing FFA board members Brian Schwartz and Phillip Wolanski.
After losing the first leg in Montevideo by one goal to nil, the Socceroos turned the tables on the South Americans by winning 1-0, thanks to a first-half goal from Mark Bresciano, and prevailing 4-2 in the subsequent shootout.
