Goodwin's eyes on Socceroos prize

Watching Australia's latest round of World Cup qualifying matches on television inspired Adelaide United's Craig Goodwin, who believes a return to the Socceroos squad remains within reach.

But the 23-year-old said he knew he had to work even harder and play even better in the A-League before that dream could become a reality.

Goodwin, who played two games for the Socceroos under previous coach Holger Osieck, said there were several factors that made him believe he could get back into the national squad.

The Socceroos' style of play, the fact coach Ange Postecoglou was prepared to use multiple A-League players if they were in form, and the elevation of his teammate, Tarek Elrich, to the Australian team at the age of 28 are all encouraging signs for Goodwin.

"We all know what he [Elrich] has been through and how hard he has worked since he came to Adelaide. His form last season was sensational. Everyone here is proud of him. He's been fantastic for us and he is now getting the recognition he deserves." he said

The Reds wide man enjoyed the way the Socceroos played because it was bent on attack.

"If you can dominate possession it allows your fullbacks and wingers, which is the two positions I play, to be able to get on the ball and express themselves."

Goodwin said it lifted him and would surely lift other A-League players with dreams of playing for the Socceroos to see Elrich and Melbourne City's Aaron Mooy getting plenty of game-time in World Cup qualifiers.

"I think you can see from what Ange Postecoglou is doing with his selection that it doesn't really matter where you play, just as long as you're playing and playing well," he said. "Then you're in with a chance. Seeing A-League players in the side, for me, that's a real positive.

Goodwin, who made his A-League debut for what was previously Melbourne Heart but was only there briefly before joining Newcastle Jets for two seasons, appears to have found his true home with the Adelaide club.

"Playing for the Socceroos is something I want to do, but it's not something I can just expect," he said. "It's something that's out there as a possibility and something I really want, but I've got to focus on my time at Adelaide before a Socceroos call-up might be warranted.

"If I can put in good performances consistently over a period of time, then, who knows? Maybe then I can get that opportunity.

Goodwin versatility has been an asset for the Reds and he expects to be deployed at both left-back and left-wing again this season.

"My personal preference is to play as a winger - that's what I played growing up and I feel more comfortable there - but playing in the system that we use at Adelaide, when we're able to keep the ball and create a lot of attacking chances I like playing at left-back as well.

"Especially when Sergio Cirio is playing at left wing, because I have a great understanding with him and I find we link up really well. So, for me, I prefer winger, but I'm totally comfortable playing in that fullback role, especially when we have the ball."
