Socceroos star Oar aims to go to town at Ipswich

Australia's wing wizard Tommy Oar said he hoped that his transfer to English Championship side Ipswich Town would bring the best out of his game and make him realise his full potential.

Oar, who signed a two-year contract with the Tractor Boys at the weekend, is in Perth with the Socceroos squad that is preparing for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh on Thursday night.

The 23-year-old said he learnt a lot from his five-year stint with FC Utrecht in the Netherlands but playing in England was always his childhood dream and he is delighted to be joining an ambitious club like Ipswich.

"My game improved significantly since I left the A-League in 2010 to play for Utrecht," Oar, 23, said.

"Going to the Netherlands to continue my development was a fantastic step.

"Australian football does not focus too much on such things as tactical awareness and the need to keep possession.

"I think the basis of my game is still to be positive, take players on and put crosses into the box.

"This is a big part of the English game and for this reason I've always wanted to play in England.

"My development up to when I went abroad was always focused on the English style.

"So I think my transition to the English game would not be as difficult as it could have been in other countries.

"I hope my stint in 'familiar' England will make me a better player.

"I believe there is a better chance for me to flourish in the English environment than there was anywhere else."
Oar can look forward to his stint with promotion-seeking Ipswich after a harrowing time in the latter stages of his contract with Utrecht.

He was frozen out by the club after being honest enough to inform itsix months before the expiry of his contract that he was seeking a move elewhere.

Oar saw precious little game time after serving the club well since day one and had every reason to leave on a sour note but he is not bitter about the chain of events that would lead him to Portman Road.

"There are two sides of the coin, I guess," Oar said.

"I tried to do the right thing and I was always honest with them.

"I didn't make promises which I knew I would not keep, such as telling them I would re-sign when I knew that my intentions were different.

"It was a bit frustrating not to play but I do not really have any regrets about the way it ended.

"Despite the last months being very difficult I enjoyed four great seasons with Utrecht.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity that they gave me and for developing my game."

Oar, who burst through the A-League ranks as a dashing winger for Queensland Roar, played a peripheral role in Australia's AFC Asian Cup triumph in January but he is back in favour in the current World Cup campaign.

He scored a goal in the Socceroos' 2-1 victory over Kyrgyzstan in their first World Cup qualifier in Bishkek and is expected to start against Bangladesh at nib Stadium on Thursday night.

"Ange (Postecoglou) has created a very competitive culture within the Socceroos group and there is now so much more competition for places than there was 12 months ago," he said.

"Obviously the Asian Cup on a personal level was at times frustrating, not getting the game time I wanted.

"I guess looking at the big picture, since Ange has been in charge I have been given plenty of opportunities so it's up to me to perform on the field and at every camp I come in.

"I am happy with the way our qualification has started but at the same time I am not taking anything for granted.

"I think most people would agree that for me the most difficult thing has not been reaching a certain level but playing consistently at that level.

"So I'm not looking too far ahead but taking it one game at a time and trying to do the best I can each game."
