Postecoglou shifts focus to on-field performance

It was all about the football and not the in-fighting for Australia coach Ange Postecoglou as he moved to switch the focus from the pay war engulfing the Socceroos back onto the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh.

Keener to talk about on-field actions, rather than forced retractions, a measured Postecoglou did his utmost to douse the fire after he was forced into a backflip by FFA for criticising the conduct of both his paymasters and Professional Footballers Australia.
After saying in a statement released through FFA that ''as a senior employee of Football Federation Australia I understand that my comments were inappropriate", Postecoglou fronted the media at the pre-game conference and put his apparent climbdown into perspective.

Despite describing that the tactics employed by the warring factions which brought its escalating dispute into Socceroos camp as "not good enough" on Tuesday, Postecoglou said his intent yesterday "was to talk about football".

"But I guess I created another day of headlines, so maybe I should have tackled that a different way," Postecoglou said.

"But, we are 24 hours away from a World Cup qualifier and my thoughts and my focus is totally on that right now... if I did anything other than that I wouldn't be doing my job."
Postecoglou was swift to reply when asked whether off-field fracas had proved a distraction for his players.

"I was concerned yesterday that's why I said what I said."

"But to be the fair, the players and staff have been really good as always and maybe it has just become a distraction for me."

"You get pretty sensitive around a team environmnet at things that maybe filter through and make you lose focus."

"From my perspective, I wanted to protect the fact we have a game in a couple of days time. So, I have no fears about the players being distracted."

Tim Cahill, who will captain the side against Bangladesh, echoed coach coach Postecoglou's sentiments.

"Obviously, we don't need this in camp and what the boss does is to protect us and as an older player I know it's a responsibility of mine, Matt McKay's and Mark Milligan's to also protect the boys," Cahill said.

"We have stayed professional and the camp has been good. It would be an injustice for us to concenrate on the politics and not focus on the football."

Players have been refusing to attend commercial events in the build up to the game in what has become a damaging side-show.

But Cahill and Postecoglou have both been quick to dismiss thoughts that the match against Bangladesh had been all but overshadowed.

"It's just about the game and nothing more or us... I would never have the inregrity of the players being questioned, especially after the commitment they have given on and off the park in the last decade," Cahill said.

"We have good intel on Bangladesh and they are good on the counter attack and can mix it up going forward and defending," Cahill said.

"We need to concentrate on ourselves also and put on a good performance."

Postecoglou backed-up his decision to award Cahill the captain's armband for this match.

"It's not about naming a captain... what's most important is for senior players to take ownership of leadership around the group, and Timmy is a massive part of that," Postecoglou said.

"We don't do any big ceremonies on appointing a captain."

With three points already in the bag in Group B, Australia sits alongside Jordan and Kyrgyzstan with 170th-ranked Bangladesh holding just one point from two games.

Postecoglou, who has a wealth of attacking armoury at his disposal from the likes of returning Tom Rogic, Massimo Luongo, Nathan Burns, Cahill and Mathew Leckie, is looking to put on spectacle at a sold out nib Stadium.

"Our football in our last game in Kyrgyzstan (a 2-1 win) was nowhere near the level we want," Postecoglou said.

"One reason for that was that a lot of the boys weren't in great condition.

"It's a whole different ball game this time. They have had pre-seasons and are all in good shape. We want to put on a show but it's a World Cup qualifier and it's three points on offer."

Postecoglou, who may not decide on his final line-up until the morning of the match, said the team was under no illusions.

"If it doesn't go well on Thursday night all people are going to ask is 'how come we didn't win a game of football'. That ain't going to happen under my watch."
