A number of big-money deals were completed as the English transfer window drew to a close with one among them ranking in the five most expensive of the northern summer.

Here are some of the most notable deadline-day deals.

Anthony Martial (Monaco to Manchester United, $78.5 million)
Age: 19
Position: Striker
Career highlights: Named in team of the tournament at 2013 European Under-21 Championship
Previous transfers: 2013 - Lyon to Monaco, $8.1 million

United was expected to bring in a striker but this remarkable deal came out of the blue. The fee is a world record for a teenager and a gamble on a player who is relatively unproven. But he comes highly rated and has been likened in the French media to a young Thierry Henry. He scored 10 goals in 44 appearances last season and was described as "untransferable" by Monaco when he signed a new contract just three months ago.

Alex Song (Barcelona to West Ham, season-long loan)
Age: 27
Position: Midfielder
Career highlights: La Liga winner, 2013
Previous transfers: 2006 - Bastia to Arsenal, $2.2 million; 2012 - Arsenal to Barcelona, $32.7 million

The Hammers were keen to bring back Song after he impressed while on loan at Upton Park last season. The Cameroon midfielder was particularly influential in the first half of the 2014-2015 campaign and he should settle back in quickly.

Papy Djilobodji (Nantes to Chelsea, $4.8 million)
Age: 26
Position: Defender
Career highlights: Winning promotion to Ligue 1 with Nantes, 2013
Previous transfers: 2009 - ASC Saloum to US Senart-Moissy, free; 2010 - US Senart-Moissy to Nantes, $765,000

Much less is known about Djilobodji than Chelsea's prime defensive target, John Stones, but at a fraction of the cost the London giant may have landed a bargain. Djilobodji can play as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-back and, having come through the divisions in France, may be ready for the next step up. Manchester City's Yaya Toure is known to rate him highly.

Virgil van Dijk (Celtic to Southampton, $25.1 million)
Age: 24
Position: Defender
Career highlights: Scottish Premiership titles 2014 & 2015, Scottish League Cup 2015
Previous transfers: 2010 - Willem II to Groningen, free; 2013 - Groningen to Celtic, $5.7 million

Van Dijk moves to St Mary's after two impressive years at Celtic. The Dutchman is a strong centre-back who can contribute goals and has been a key part of Celtic's recent success. He has come through the Dutch under-age sides and has been close to full senior recognition. He appears ready for a move to the Premier League.

Ramiro Funes Mori (River Plate to Everton, $20.7 million)
Age: 24
Position: Defender
Career highlights: Copa Libertadores winner, 2015
Previous transfers: n/a

The Argentina international finally completed his move to Goodison Park some nine days after manager Roberto Martinez suggested it was imminent. The fee paid, being around $9 million higher than had been expected, perhaps hints at why negotiations dragged on. Funes Mori is a left-footed centre-half who has experienced winning the South American equivalent of the Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, and is capped by Argentina.
