Mr Personality: Geria on celebrations, being invisible, Zizou and the US Open

Melbourne Victory defender Jason Geria is the subject of a regular feature where The World Game has a bit of fun with the game's stars by asking them questions they wouldn't normally be asked and letting their personalities shine.

Geria told TWG:

What the A-League championship-winning celebrations were like;
What it's like to be invisible;
The best advice anyone has ever given him;
How many stars he gives the new movie, Southpaw;
His dream quartet to invite around for dinner;
Why it would be cool to play in a US Open tennis final.

TWG: How were the A-League championship-winning celebrations? How long did they go on for?

JG: (Laughs). They were very good, they went on for, oh, maybe a couple of weeks. We kept getting together for lunch, or functions, or whatever. It was a very good atmosphere and everyone was enjoying themselves. Before people went away for individual holidays we had that period of time together, which was good.

TWG: And which players were the most enthusiastic when it came to celebrating? Was there an absolute standout?

JG: Everyone came out, there weren't too many people holding back I'd say, because it had been a long wait between trophies for Victory. I don't know if I could really pick one out, everyone was pretty happy. Archie (Thompson) and Broxy' (Leigh Broxham) had been waiting the longest for another Victory championship, so they were pretty lively.

TWG: How recognisable are you in Melbourne these days? Do you get pulled up for a chat on the street or in cafes?

JG: (Laughs). No, I'm invisible. I can glide through Melbourne with ease.

TWG: What, no-one pulls you up?

JG: No, not really. Melbourne's a very big place.

TWG: You're going to have to start hanging around with Archie then, aren't you?

JG:  Archie, yeah, he gets pulled up, and Bes (Besart Berisha) gets pulled up a lot as well. They're among the guys who are more well-known and popular. But I'm happy, I'm fine.

TWG: Something a bit deeper - what is your dream in life?

JG: I just want to progress as a footballer and eventually go overseas and have a lengthy career there. But I'm happy at Victory right now. It was an easy decision to re-sign here for the next two seasons - I didn't want to be anywhere else.

TWG: What is the best advice anyone has given you, whether it's about football, or life - or both?

JG: Just to back yourself and that if you really want something you can achieve it if you're willing to work hard enough and make sacrifices and do whatever it takes to get it.

TWG: What do you do in your spare time?

JG: I get around to coffee shops a lot, read, listen to music, stuff like that.

TWG: What sort of music? What's on your iPod?

JG: A lot of different music, a lot of relaxed, chilled stuff. I'm not into the heavy stuff. The techno, that's not really me. A lot of hip-hop - old hip-hop. Stuff that was first around when I would have been very young.

TWG: What about television? Is there anything you've got to watch every week, or do you leave the box alone?

JG: I really don't watch that much television, to be honest. I watch the news but that's about it. There's a lot happening in the world, so I like to keep up with it.

TWG: What about movies? Do you occasionally go out to see one?

JG: I went and saw Southpaw, the boxing film, the other night. It wasn't what I was expecting, it was a lot deeper, a lot of emotion in it. The actual fight scenes were full-on.

TWG: How many stars would you give it out of five?

JG: I'd say a three. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I was expecting.

TWG: If you had your choice from people around the world you admire, in sport or whatever, who do you think you would invite to your place for dinner?

JG: I'd have to invite my mum first. Then Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Will Smith. That would be my four. I'd be happy with that.

TWG: Are you interested in other sports - watching and/or playing?

JG: I like watching tennis and basketball. As far as playing goes, I'll go and shoot some hoops, but that's about it. I'm not really intense when it comes to playing any other sports. A lot of the boys like playing golf but I don't have the patience to play golf.

TWG: Finally, if you were able to transfer yourself into another sport and immediately play at the highest level and contest a big event, what would it be?

JG: Probably a US Open tennis final. It's much more like a football-type atmosphere at the US Open than the other tennis events. It would be very intense, with so many people focused on you as an individual.
