Davidson and Luongo to clash ahead of Socceroos camp

Australia team-mates Jason Davidson and Massimo Luongo will be on the same flight to Perth on Sunday for FIFA World Cup duty - but not before they collide in the English Championship in what promises to be a helter-skelter duel between Huddersfield Town and Queens Park Rangers.

With his new Yorkshire club still searching for its first win of the season after four games, Davidson will be doing his best to help nullify the threat of the emerging QPR playmaker while launching some raids of his own down the left as the frenemies do battle on Saturady night (AEST).

The duo are avid admires of one another, and Davidson, whose Huddersfield side sits third bottom with three points from four games, knows that Luongo has the capacity to compound its problems.

"We're at home and we need a result after a loss and three draws, and Mass will have to be watched closely because he can create something out of nothing," Davidson said.

"In the last 12 months he has really come onto the scene … a lot of people didn't know too much about him before the Asian Cup and that's where he stamped his authority and showed what he's all about."

Both have started all four league games so far for their new clubs, and have made an impression.

"Mass was key factor for the Socceroos back in January and has made a realy good start at QPR. He's a player who loves to get forward and is very creative," added Davidson.

"As you saw in the Asian Cup final, he just needs half a chance and he can put the ball in the back of the net.

"He had interest from the Premier League but I think going to QPR has been a good move because regular game time for all of us is important.

"He’s beginning to make a name for himself over here, and hopefully he has a big season with QPR and makes the next step into the Premier league.”

Luongo returns the compliment, saying of Davidson, who joined Huddersfield after being granted a release after a frustrating season at West Bromwich Albion: “Jason’s a quality player who is your classic attacking left back who gets into dangerous areas and sends over crosses which can cause a lot of problems.

“He’s getting lots of game time now after being unlucky at West Brom last season and not playing as much as he'd have wanted.

“Coming up against him gives the game a little extra spice, but we’ll just be happy to keep up the momentum we’ve gained over the last couple of matches and pick up some more points.”

QPR lies sixth after successive wins, with Luongo starting to turn some heads with his ingenuity in the final third.

“It’s going to be enjoyable playing against Jason … he’s been doing well and is technical player who knows how I look after the ball. That's one of things I really like about his game.

“If he’s in a tight situation, he doesn’t rush things and always looks to get a good pass away and he can also go long with that ball into channels, which is great also,

“For us, it’s a difficult game. In this league you never know from week to week how any club will play and there's that unpredictability about it. That's what makes the division so exciting.”

Davidson is relishing the freedom granted him by coach Chris Powell, as he builds up a head stem for his new club.

"I've always been a type of player who is fit and can run people into the ground, and these are just early days where my teammates are still getting used to my style of play.

"I will make those runs forward and I am outlet for them, and slowly we are starting click.

"With playing twice a week I am starting to get stronger and I am having more of an impact ... defending well and getting forward and creating chances.

"I also take the set-plays now in the team and I am starting to find my feet. I need to just make sure there's no complacency, and to be consistent and maintain and also improve on the standards I've created already."

Davidson believes the Championship doesn't get the recognition it deserves from those outside the UK.

"A lot of people don't release how big the Championship is and I under-estimated it also before coming here," he admitted.

"There are big teams with big followings and it's a really hard league which gives us Australian boys a chance to make a name for ourselves in England because Premier League clubs respect players who come in from the Championship.

"I just want to have a solid year, play well and make that step back into the Prem."
