It's Roda not Roma as Glory cashes in on De Silva

Whizkid Daniel De Silva's long-mooted transfer to Europe has taken a series of late twists and turns with Perth Glory owner Tony Sage finally confirming the playmaker's contract now belongs to Roda - and not Roma.

De Silva
Sage spoke out after his own club released a statement declaring that the fringe Socceroos player had been loaned to the Eredivisie outfit while still remaining a Glory player.

A club spokesman also declared the sale to Roma was off the table, with the implication that Perth had missed out on a transfer fee which will rise to $1.8 million with add-ons.

However, according to Sage, the 18-year-old is now no longer a Glory player and the club has been paid in full.

Sage said any deal which takes De Silva from Roda back to Italian heavyweight Roma is a matter for those clubs to work out in the future and none of Glory's concern.

"It doesn't matter to us whether we sold him to Roma or Roda," Sage said.

"In the end Roda, through Roma, have got Danny's services. We've signed an agreement and are still getting $1.8 million, so I am happy. Danny is happy, everybody is happy."

Sage believes that Roma may have come to an agreement with Roda for De Silva to stay in the Netherlands for the time being because his arrival would have exceeded its allotted number of players without European passports.

"They have a small issue with overseas players and may have decided to loan him out for one year or two," Sage said.

"That's between Roma and Roda ... we have no say. All we had to do was change the contract of sale from Roma to Roda.

"Everybody is saying the deal has fallen through with Roma ... it hasn't because we had already been paid most of the money and were simply instructed to then deal with Roda by Danny and his father."
"Not many players Danny's age would go straight to the club that wants them, they do get loaned out. We have sold him on and the deal between Roda and Roma has nothing to do with us.

"Danny is over there now and is training with Roda."

The deal to Roma seemed cast iron last month when the 18-year-old was on the bench in Melbourne as the Serie A side took on Manchester City and Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup.

While training with Roma, De Silva produced enough in several sessions to earn accolades from manager Rudi Garcia and captain Francesco Totti.

Roda managing director Wim Collard said De Silva's versatility will be an asset for the club.

"We are very pleased that Daniel has come to our team. We can use him for several positions in the midfield and internationally he is known for his great talent," Collard said.

"I expect that he will bring us a lot of joy and success in the coming two seasons.”
